Exclamation My dog was attacked pt. 3 please help (with pictures)

We went to the vet and my Riley needs surgery. It is so deep and now its also infected. He's taking it like a champ but I'm beside myself. They have cut tall out and then put him back together. He's going in Friday morning. In the meantime its couch potato time for him. He's on antibiotics again and more pain and swelling meds. I just feel so horrible for him. He didn't do anything to deserve this.

Now I also have to call the owners of the pitiful that attacked him. I don't know how to say I need the money for Friday. Its just shy of $3000. Any ideas of how to word it? I was going to start with updating them in Riley but I don't know how to word it when it comes to the money part.

ETA: I just called and they think they should only pay half. Like what? Your dog attacked my dog on my property. Supposedly your dog was friendly yet attacked my dog with no warning. Why are you only responsible for half? I was nice as can be about this and now I feel like I have to report everything and such. This is the route I didn't want to take. I know how much we love our dogs.

I feel like Riley's acting different. He's barking and growling at people as they walk by now. And when we were at the vet a tiny dog walked past us he backed up with his tail between his legs. Both things are totally out of character for him. He lost never ever barks and I don't think Ive ever heard him growl until all of this. Do you think this is something permanent? My poor baby.

My Dog was attacked pt. 1

My lab was attacked by a pitbull. It was the scariest thing I've ever seen or been involved with. My poor baby is the gentlest and least aggressive dog. He loves other dogs and people and now I'm scared he's going to change. The poor thing was on is leash on his property in my control. The pitbull spotted him and just attacked him. No warning or anything and even brought his owner to the ground. He wouldn't let go of my baby. He locked on him. It took 5 guys to get him to release and then my baby ran off into the woods.
We took him to get care and he's on a couple different meds and needs rest and love. And of course attention to his wounds. I feel so horrible for him it's killing me. I keep replaying it in my head and can't sleep. I keep snuggling with him and he's just so defeated. I just don't know what to do. I'm afraid his sweet gentle nature will change too. I don't want him to be scared of other dogs. It's just the worst feeling to feel so helpless and not be able to make him feel better.
I really need a place to talk to others and well wishes please. I'm just so lost and don't know how to make him feel at peace. And for me one of the worst parts is that the other dog is allowed to stay at our camp (we own a piece of land in a campground).
The whole thing is just horrible. If there anything else I can do to help him feel more comfortable? And would I be a horrible person for asking that the other dog be removed from the campground? I was told this is the second dog he did this to.

My dog was attacked pt. 2

Can you tell me if this looks like it is healing right? It's on his right shoulder.

He is acting like himself being playful and playing outside. He doesn't appear to be in pain or to be to bothered by it either. I must say though overall is usually is a happy go lucky kind of puppy.

"Don't worry about it"....my phrase for any time one of mine reacts fearfully to anything. "Don't worry about it...it's just noise." "Don't worry about it...it's just a human." Etc. Calmly.

Poor Riley is dealing with not feeling well and being on meds...these can cause behavioral changes in and of themselves. If a dog feels weird, he feels more vulnerable to things around him. Be calm and let this aspect of things sort itself out as he recovers mentally and physically.

Phone conversation. Riley's wounds were deeper than originally thought...he's on stronger pain meds and is infected...and he needs more surgery. The estimate for the surgery bills is $_______. I'll need it by (the day you need it to pay the bill).

I'm so sorry this took a turn for the worse. You and Riley are in my thoughts!!!

Thank you. I'll try that with him too. And thank you for your kind words.

The dog needs to be reported to Animal Control and/or the police, depending on how your State is organized. The people must be held accountable for the actions of their dog. Don't let them take advantage of your niceness.

He left it as he'll see what he can do and call me back in a little while. But I think I'm going to have to call animal control both in our state and the state it happened in. Then also the owners of the campground. Which it truly hurts to do. But I heard this wasn't the first time either. I do feel bad for the other dog.

Report everything to everyone then take them to small claims court. Document all of it. They will not pay you even half. My prediction is that they'll dig in and make you force them. This is what legal action is for. It's like my neighbors who were farming on my property and cutting down my trees. They just pushed and pushed. So we pushed back. It's a personality type and these people are the type who own a dangerous dog and don't take responsibility for its behavior.

I agree with above. If he didn't say how soon he'll get back to you, if he doesn't respond quickly, it's going to be Friday morning already. If he leaves you hanging, and I bet he will, can you go ahead & pay with a credit card or Care Credit or something so Riley can get started on his way to healing, and then report it everywhere and take them to small claims court? This is not yours nor Riley's fault, so please try to stop feeling sorry for that dog & his owners (I'm the same way, but sometimes we have to be tough, or the same thing can happen all over again.) It makes me really upset for you & Riley--the pictures plainly show every single stupid toothmark. Again, your photo diary could come in very handy. If that dog did that to somebody's little kid, there'd be you-know-what to pay......Please let us know how Riley does--we'll all be keeping him in our thoughts & prayers!

This is how big this gash is now. It's so deep. It's hard to tell exactly from the picture. But it used to be just a puncture hole and now it's about 3" long.
