So wish I could think there was an innocent reason but the first time he reacted was the first time the swatter was brought out of the closet, down by my side, just walking by him. I let him sniff anything new to him, a coat hanger, hair dryer, kitchen tongs, anything. He's always up to investigating but the swatter brought about an instant fear reaction.

One of my sister's dogs was terrified by the sound/sight of clothes being shaken out before folding. He was reduced to a trembling, quaking mass of furry terror. That's a pretty general type of activity- not exactly something you can picture hurting anybody. What was he relating that sound to in his earlier life that could have resulted in that extreme reaction? So, maybe it's possible that something happened near or around Archie as a wee pup during a particular fear period of his development that scared him terribly but didn't actually involve him being struck with a fly swatter although somehow a fly swatter was involved or within view. If only they could tell us and if only we could explain so they could understand. I guess you'll have to switch from a fly swatter to a rolled up newspaper for whacking at those pesky flies.
