It is with disbelief and great sorrow that I have to tell you all that Chase died early this morning.
He got up, went outside as usual and ate a good breakfast, helping me with some cottage cheese I was eating. We were driving to the beach today, my husband walked him and he ran right up into the "way back" of my car where he and Larky ride. About an hour into the drive Lark started acting anxious, panting, moving back and forth in the back. We stopped and she seemed fine, Chase appeared to be sleeping, which is what they both usually do on a drive. We were on a busy highway so since she seemed fine we drove on but she continued to move around a lot, sit up panting, then lie down again. We found an exit and pulled off to let them go to the bathroom. At that point we found that Chase was unresponsive, we couldn't wake him up, but he was breathing. Using Google Maps, we found an emergency vet less than 2 miles from where we stopped so we drove straight there. To our great sorrow, they found he was bleeding into his abdomen and they were unable to stabilize him enough for us to even consider surgery, although they called in a surgeon. We believe it was a splenic rupture and our sweet, sweet boy was gone. While there is nothing happy to say about this, at least we were all together, it seemed quick and painless, and he went off maybe dreaming of the beach where he's been going for the last 10 years.
Chase was our first lab, as gentle and handsome and loving as a lab could be. We'll miss you always, Chase, our best boy.

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”
