O what a shock, I am so very sorry for you and the whole family, poor Lark knew something was wrong. I can not comprehend how devastated you are. The only saving grace was that everyone was together, hopefully painless and his last thoughts are of his beach.

Rest gently then run free on your beach Chase.

Thank you everyone. You are correct, it was an enormous shock. Although he has been much slower on his walks he otherwise seemed fine and hadn't required any vet care since his annual check up in January and every day seemed routine.

Lark has been OK. She clearly knew something was not right there in the back of the car and if not for her we probably wouldn't have stopped as soon as we did. We took her in to the emergency vet's office and let her see Chase at the end. I don't know if that made any difference for her but we tried. She slept beside me last night. We're at the beach now so there are lots of new smells, our grandbaby is here to keep Lark and us busy. She has been asking where Chase is and at 2 years old doesn't really understand why he's not here.

In the past week he got his walks every morning when it was still cool-ish and he did love to get his walks. He got to sniff things thoroughly, roll in the cool, damp morning grass, greet neighborhood friends of both the canine and human variety, get treats from the mail carrier, get more than the usual amount of human food extras like chicken, popcorn, homemade puppuccinos, watermelon. I look back and don't regret that we didn't know what was coming because every day included things he enjoyed. Additionally, we were enjoying the time, not feeling stressed to make every day the best day ever or worrying about his decline. It may sound cornball to say that you should make every day for your pups a good day but since you never know what the next day may bring, you'll have fewer regrets.

We'll miss our Chasey Boy always.
