Now, Oban is not the instigator but the ideas apply to dogs who initiate and dogs who respond.

I think you’ve been given some good advice already, but I just wanted to add that a lot of this stuff is just who they are, and doesn’t have to be related to some traumatic event in their past.

Chloe ignores other dogs as long as they are at a reasonable distance (a few feet), but if one is barking and lunging and comes all the way up to us, yes, she would certainly respond, and it wouldn’t be pretty.

Cookie could care less and would be happy to meet the other dog no matter what is going on.

Sass is scared of dogs who do that and either barks/growls in retaliation or tries to hide behind me.

We raised Chloe from the time she was 8 weeks. Cookie and Sassy were raised by me from the time they were born with the exact same socialization experiences as each other, which were similar to how Chloe was raised. VERY different personalities. I’ve spent a lot of time working with Sass, and for her, the focus is on learning that it is ok to ignore badly behaving dogs and just keep walking. She is much better than she was when younger, and I’m pretty sure by the time she is older she will be more like Chloe in her response to on-lead dogs behaving badly. Chloe was never afraid of dogs - she just doesn’t have much interest in ones outside of her own family. Different dogs, different personalities.
