    "Summer Birds"

    Aye Mates,
Like most of our lot, me gunning Mates, me gun dog TRAD and meself can't wait until bird season comes our way. We train several days per week and participate in hunt tests when we are able to attend them, all serving to keep gun dogs on their game whilst we strengthen that special bond with our canine companions. So, in an attempt to cure the bird hunting blues for both ourselves and for TRAD, we did a pigeon shoot today. Not the usual bird busting event in terms of quantity of birds taken, the heat coupled with a shorter day of shooting and only three guns participating, we still managed to give TRAD a good day's work whilst honing our wing shooting skills in preparation for the day's afield in the coming fall. Three of us likely took approximately 60 birds, most of those being kept to be frozen for use as gun dog training birds.

Below, TRAD hangs nearby a few of the many retrieved birds taken during today's shoot. With July temperatures well into the 80's and humidity that made for a steamy shoot, I kept TRAD well hydrated and made use of available shade to keep my black four legged solar energy collector cool.

We broke up the shoot around noon to head into town for a bite to eat for lunch and returned around 1:00 PM to gun for about another hour before the sun made us cry "UNCLE" and sent us heading for home. Of course we cleaned up all of our spent shotgun hulls, a post shoot ritual we always conduct to keep our farmer host happy and the beautiful property he so graciously grants us access to in the pristine condition in which it is maintained.

    Cheers,
    Irishwhistler

I'm sure TRAD thought it was well worth putting up with a little heat for all that fun!
