When in Her Season is a Bitch Less Interesting to an Intact Dog?

We met an in-season bitch today, she and Oban both off leash. I thought I'd have to put him on the leash and drag him away, like last time, but he was happy to leave her and come with me. At least her owner said she was in heat and it looks like she's had puppies in the past so I guess he'd know. So I'm just curious, does her timing affect my dog? Affect other dogs differently?

Oh, and guess what her name was. Obi. No kidding.

She was a Vizsla, a tiny little one, but definitely adult.

They are in season for 3 weeks and they can smell "good" to intact and fixed males up to 2 weeks before hand. If allowed, they will be very insistent when she is fertile which is near the beginning of the 3rd week. But usually a well trained dog can be walked away easily. The boys know when the "right" time is vs. the "getting close" time.

In my experience they are interesting before, during, after.... lol Cookie was more interested in some females and less interested in others though.

Dogs are always interested in Sunnie and she was spayed eight years ago...

(it's no wonder she was pregnant when we got her)

I would be more concerned with an intact bitch in season off lead in an open space.

That being said, girls can be ready to breed very early in their season, (day 5 for Katy once) or very late in her cycle (Mia was once ready to be bred on day 24-26), so it doesn't really matter what day they are on, it matters if they have ovulated yet, which you don't really know for sure, unless you are testing them. (Strangely, girls with a UTI smell really good to the boys too, but that a whole different topic).
Is Oban intact? I think I remember he was neutered a year ago? A few years ago? Is he always really excited around girls in heat? How long ago was it that he went crazy for a girl in heat? Maybe she wasn't in season? Maybe being neutered has reduced his attraction to the girls?

Some boys that haven't ever been bred, (before they were neutered) and are neutered don't really care, and some well used seasoned (neutered) stud dogs will act like they are still intact and can even tie with a girl in heat. Plus there are just dogs that like each other better than others. I hear stories about how a bitch will not allow a certain male to breed her, but will with another male she likes. Good thing we have a variety of artificial insemination techniques!

One of my girls is in come-and-breed-me-now season, right now and we have been at a 4 day cluster dog show (Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday) and the boys are Crazy for her, but again, its not like they are going to jump out of the bushes, or bolt off lead and have their way wth her, they have manners, and I have been careful to keep her out of their faces as much as is possible.

Oban is intact. Shelley, you remember correctly that neuter was on the table January of 2016 for a prostate issue but the issue cleared up so he isn't neutered.

Oban was not overly pushy with this girl but she took a good snappy, snarly run at him and he got the message. A few seconds later she seemed happy to sit by him. Maybe because he so clearly got the message? Oban hasn't really been excited to the point he could not be controlled. Maybe he's used the "eau de girl in heat" that probably regularly wafted over our house from the kennel of GR two km upwind of us. We had in season girls at training and at trials too.

Yes, off leash with an in season girl. We have met other intact male dogs at this place. Oban outweighed this girl by easily 20 pounds, he's 68. The GSD and the Bernese Mountain Dog are both much bigger than Oban. If any one of them was persistent with her she could be hurt.

Mulder was only ever truly interested during the 3 or so day period while the girls were actually ovulating. I mean, sure, he’d check on their progress but he didn’t get “worked up” about it until the time was ripe (even before he was bred). We really only had to keep him and Chloe separate for those three days, although we didn’t leave them alone together at all during her season, he could be out with her without being interested in trying anything.

    interesting!

Rocky has been really crazily deeply sniffing the lawn outside our fence in the last week, week and a half. Hard to get him moving from there. Then on Saturday the lab puppy down the street walked by and her owner said she was in heat! Ahaha! Rocky must be smelling her. They said hello at the end of our driveway and since then Rocky pulls to that spot each time we go out :P Dirty old man

Mulder was still interested at 15! They never change, but instead of it being annoying, it becomes endearing, LOL.

We puppy sat Sarah's mommy when she was in heat her owner was going out of town and didn't trust her husband to keep her safe, so she came here because our boys were altered. Bailey didn't want anything to do with her until she was done LOL I guess he didn't want to be accused of something he didn't do. Coleman was a little more interested in her but again he pretty much stayed clear of her even with her rubbing all over him.

Ginger came into heat several days after we rescued her, NO body wanted to go near her she was so mean and nasty

There would be no way I would take my girl anywhere near a public park while in heat let alone off leash.
