Ok tks everyone! It's always been a dream of mine to get a Lab, but I also want to make sure it would make Vontae's life better if I do. So, maybe since I essentially can pick and choose any dog/pup from the breeder for free, I will go with a young adult (around 2-3 years old), so that I can observe her interact with Vontae and see how the two of them get along. Can even arrange multiple get-togethers to make sure they would be a good fit. I just don't want my own desires to trump Vontae's welfare, that's the bottom line.
Thanks again!
Kevin
Sure thing will do! BTW this dog is a possibility - she will be 3 in Jan 2018, which means if I take her home some time in 2018, she'll be under breeding foster arrangement for another year or two before I can spay her and have her 100%.

Ooh...pretty girl. She looks like she'd like a Poodle friend!
Yeah it's strange not to see more poodles in the water; I have a feeling it has more to do with the owners' mentalities rather than the dogs. I would venture to guess that more standard poodle owners would swim and run their dogs than mini poodle owners, because more standard poodle owners treat their dogs like sporting dogs, whereas mini poodle owners tend to treat them more like lap dogs. And I think to a certain extent, it's true - with a mini, you can get away with being a relatively inactive owner, walking the dog only a few times a day on leash for bathroom breaks and as long as you're spending time with your mini at home, the mini can still be happy.
But, as you can see with Vontae, you can certainly do a lot more than that with a mini if you choose - you just don't have to, and the dog will not be miserable if you don't. Vontae lived a pretty sedentary life for his first two years until I adopted him, and he came very well-socialized and happy, just not nearly as athletic as he is now (didn't know how to swim before). With a standard poodle, I have a feeling that they really would be much happier if they're allowed to run and swim frequently, like labs.
