I lost it on the vet.

I've posted about her behavior before. She's having her own issues and just goes on and on about the dogs' cancers. I've barely been able to hold it together during the appointments. Now Fran's is probably back. There's something on her lung x-ray and we have reason to believe that it's back in the area where her spleen used to be. But there's not much in terms of options at this point and she's in really good shape all around so we've been dealing with it well.

In any event, this change in circumstances was like blowing the door wide open for the vet. Mind you, she's not our oncologist. She can't do anything about what's happening. That's what the oncologist is for. But she just can't help herself. I told her point blank that I didn't want to talk about it. I said that there's nothing we (she) can do and we'll take it as it comes. I got a little emotional and the assistant gave me a box of tissues. I could not have been clearer.

And off she went! Fifteen minutes. Now I'm actively crying. She would not stop. I just snapped and said, "This stops right now. I am about to take Fran and walk out of that door. I do not want to talk about this! There is nothing to do here. Same thing with Nikki. I know my limits. This is my limit." Then I cried during the rest of the exam. Could not keep it together.

Scared her to death. If an emotional response was what she was looking for, she got it. She was initially very sympathetic and started to cry herself and said that she respected my position but by the time I checked out, she was pretty standoffish. That may be it for the relationship. Incidentally, she also charges by time, not appointment so all of this time she spends as her way of venting her own issues with the situation are being charged to us. Which is just unacceptable given the fact that we've racked up about $35K so far.

I'm exhausted. Had to go home and hang out with my dogs to recover from the vet.

I am so very sorry you have to deal with this at the vets office, while at home you are realistic about your dogs future. Charging my the time? Ugh...

Dog bless you for all you have done for your dogs, I am thinking of you your hubby and Fran.

This doesn't sound like a visit with a genuine medical professional, to be honest. Her personal reactions and charging by her time?

I'm sorry you're in this situation...I'd go elsewhere, though.

I agree. Especially since this is a long standing issue with her and she has a habit of using your "time" to talk about her issues then charges you for it. That's what therapists are for, not veterinarians.

I’m with the others ... doesn’t sound like a good, professional person. And I’ve NEVER been charged by their time.

We've been going to her for eight years. Frankly, she saved both Fran and Nikki when our conventional vet gave up on them and she was able to resolve Argos' seizures without prescription meds. She charges the way she does because she puts together custom supplement and diet programs for each dog according to their circumstances. She is also an acupuncturist and chiropractor. Clearly, however, she can't handle the fact that she can't cure cancer.

I need to wean us off of her though. This is not a resolvable problem.

So sorry for what happened. I agree, time to move on which is a shame as she seems to have been of great help in the past.

There is a time to do everything possible and a time to know when what you do will only cause more pain and illness than letting nature run it's course. It's hard to swallow. I have found vets who are unable to accept the fact that they cannot cure every dog. Heck, I've met human doctors like that.

Sending gentle pats and sending hugs to you.

Seems like this is the issue. and/or she is deeply affected by cancer and the topic is not one she can handle.

but still no excuse for her behavior. not as a professional and not even as a compassionate human being You even tried to ask that you just not discuss the cancer aspect and deal with everything else and she couldn't

I'm sorry you are having to deal with this on top of everything
