For those of you who remember my story with Abby in 2010

    -img_0357-jpg-img_0002-jpg

It's a little long, but it will tell the story.

Back when I was a regular poster, and had gotten know some people on the board. It may ring a bell that I believe Snoeshoe had just gotten a new pup and Patty was busy flying all around the board being a saint to those who had questions. All around late 09,10,11. I had also talked with some fellas from the Carolina's, back where I am from.

About Abby, a little backdrop story for those who don't remember. I had been wanting a new lab, I was living in Florida at the time and my other two ( who have now passed ) were living back at my folks house. Honestly, Dad wouldn't let them go. Turned out to be fine and opportunity to rescue a lab from a "high kill" shelter down in Florida. This is the last stop for dogs that have been in the confines of a air conditioned shelter and now were sentenced to 10 days to get a home. I had to make a difference, and I knew there had to be at least one pure blooded ( most likely Field/American ) lab in there.

So, I walked along the isles of the outdoor shelter and couldn't help but notice a black lab pup jumping up on the door trying to get my attention everytime I walked by. I purposely ignored her to see the reactions of the other dogs as well. While I would have liked to saved them all, budget and land only allowed for one rescue. As I walked up to the front the older lady looked at me and said " Well, did you see on that you liked ?" I replied " Yea, let me see that black female lab about midways down the isle". She replied " If you're looking for a thoroughbred, she is one, all signs say yes".

So, I asked for a ball and a little running room outside to see what we've got here. I threw the ball, pointed and said "go get it" and she retrieved like a champ after the 9th straight attempt. I told her to sit, pointed at her back end, and she sat. Here was this hyper dog just trying to get my attention to say " Hey, about to be your best friend for a long time". Btw:she ended up being the easiest to train out of the 5.

After having her spayed, all shots, she has lived the spoiled life. Sleeping on cold nights on a couch of her own and we played ball non stop, I mean she could go for and hour and a half. Take a nap, and be ready again. That's the thing, if you know you are adopting a dog that comes from a hunting/retrieving pedigree, you better know the energy level. However, along with that came superior intelligence with this dog. A dog that "knows your number and can get away with anything now". She's now nine.

After two torn ACL( canine term aka ?) She has recovered nicely. It was hard, and a tough financial decision, but this girl had won my heart along time ago. She now enjoys leisure days barking at neighbors with her 4 year old pal Lacy.

Attached is a picture ( pre-surgery ) of her dock diving. She absolutely loved it. Those days are past us now, but we enjoy our walks and an occasional chase after a squirl. She's showing her age with a grey beard. Not grey around the eyes yet, but we're just enjoying each day at a time. Lacy, she is handful. She's Abby's little buddy. A English/fielld lab that was the runt.
I've attached a picture of them both also. No awesome photography, but just catching up and telling a good story of how a dog saved me ( went through a rough time for a while ), but I thought I saved her. Funny how that works.

I'll, post more on Lacy in the future. I just wanted to tell the story of Abby, who is in my avitar pic, and maybe catch up with some old friends and make some new ones.

I remember your story. Abby (at the shelter) reminded my of my yellow girl Honey...except that Honey was "dog on a pogo stick" until she aged and her "bad hips waiting to happen" happened. I'm glad you reminded us. So nice to know that Abby is continuing to enjoy her life and now has a great dog companion as well as a great human companion.

Thank you for the refresher. I do remember some of that and I think you had the dock diving photo up then? It looks familiar. Abby is a lucky girl. So is Lacy. Welcome back.

Thank you & I remember your dog Honey. Seems I asked you back then about supplements. A person can learn alot in this forum around some really knowledgeable people. That is how we build friendship, for the betterment of our dogs, for them and us. It's amazing how many friends Labs I have trained over the years, some in part from the knowledge of this forum.

Thanks for the kind words Sundance.

    Snowshoe

Yes, you are correct. The dock diving photo was in my avatar for a while, then I changed it to the picture it is now. That's Abby in the snow when she was 3. Thought I'd go back with it for familiarity. I remember you posting picture after picture of your pup back then. Good stuff. Glad to be amongst friends, and I figured the story would ring a bell to some.

Glad to be back, and yes Abby and her pal Lacy send me off to work everyday to pay the bills while they nap all day, the nerve..
