    Rare Find??

We stopped at our local bookstore on the way home from the hunt test yesterday. I always take a look at the "classic/collectable" section and came across this book. Looked interesting, and at $7, I figured it was a bargain! Anyone out there know this book?

Oh wow, yes an early sportsman's bible for water dog training!
Methods have changed a lot, but a lot of basics are the same.

    I have a copy, $7 is a good deal :-)

Back when Bandit was with us I picked up some really old "how to show in conformation" type books to become more informed. That name sure rings a bell. BTW, Bandit started eating one of the books, he hated the show ring thus him becoming available to us.

    Barry,
Most of us that started the hunt test and field trial games, or trained their own gun dogs in the 70's and 80's own a copy of that book. The pages of mine are covered with mw own notes in the margins.

It is a piece of retriever training history. Things have changed significantly since Dick Wolters penned that book and I haven't taken mine off the shelf in years. It did get a lot of us started back in the day.

Oh yeah, that's oldie but goodie. If you have some money to spend, you should look up the old used Labrador books sometimes available on Amazon. They are fun to get, usually in decent condition, and give you a lot of old insight to the breed.

Oh for sure. We got our first Labs maybe in the mid-70's and that's the book I used. Yep. Then I took my backyard-bred Lab to a Sanctioned Field Trial and got a little ribbon. That was it. Hooked forever.

I think I have an old copy of either Water Dog or Game Dog around here somewhere that I won in a raffle at a show years ago!

I"m still amazed at the number of people who claim to have trained their hunting dog from that book (I have it and Game dog and maybe Family dog even here). There really isn't that much training content! It is entertaining reading, however.

Windycanyon is absolutely right. This book pales relative to the materials put out by the likes of Lardy, Graham, etc. No longer the "go to" book it was over thirty years ago.
