Are you a one dog or two dog person?

I like to visit the SPCA website of adoptable dogs (it’s a nice break from reading the news). No danger of adopting when I already have a dog. I’m a one-dog-at-a-time person and definitely a one big dog person. Never mind I thought of my beagle boy recently and how well he and Boomer would’ve suited each other. No danger whatsoever. Of course, this is when I spot Bentley who’s two (beagles are rarely available for adoption, let alone young purebred looking ones). For the first time, I find myself seriously thinking of having two dogs.

Good with dogs & cats. Bad start in life so he runs & hides from people. Has bonded with foster & sleeps on the bed (good signs). Ideal if adopted to home with friendly, confident dog.

Good thing this SPCA branch isn’t within easy driving distance. I find myself considering the possibility. But logic says no. I’m obviously being nostalgic. Or aware Boomer’s getting older. Of course, someone might already be in the process of adopting him.

Has anyone always been a one dog person like me but made the transition to having two? What’s your preference?

I've pretty much always had 2. There have been brief periods when we would lose one, before the next one came along. Personally I don't think it's any harder having two, except when one is a puppy, but once they mature is really pretty easy.

I have always been a 2 dog person. Like Barry have had a few months between where there has only been 1 in the house.

Started as a one dog person with Bruno. After he passed I got Kendal. Decided he needed a companion and adopted Rex, a blind, heart worm positive senior. Married Andrew, and he came with Stella and Achilles, and we ended up a four dog household. After Rex passed we adopted BoJo, another senior. We had moved to another town and they had a three dog limit. Got permission to have four dogs with the understanding that when one of them passed we couldn’t get another. BoJo passed and we remained with the three. Kendal passed and we became a two dog household and started fostering. Ended up adopting Fitzi just over a year ago. Stella passed this spring and back to two dogs. Had the intention of staying that way, but then this past week another of the dogs we fostered was returned and well, Thursday we will again become a three dog household. May be we just like to push the limit.

because of my schedule, 1 dog. i'd like two but then it means one dog is alone much longer if I take classes with the other dog (I guess i could do only weekend classes...but sometimes the classes i want are not on weekends)

Two dogs here, too. In the past, when I was working, I liked the idea that the dogs would keep each other company during the day. There have been two instances when I had only one....both my Honey and Baffle were "only" dogs (Honey was good with dogs we had when we got her but she developed into a dog who needed to not know others). In each case, it felt weird to have only one even though that was what the circumstance dictated.

These two are destined to be our last dogs so I will have one more bout of this kind of weird. And then weirder still when there are none.

    What a nice Beagle.

Started as a one-dog family, but added another once the first one was 3. Now that I’ve had multiples, I don’t think I’d ever purposely have a lone dog again, except as others have said if we were in between dogs. I think their lives are that much more rich for having other dogs to interact with. Now that said, all of mine have always gotten along with their housemates and not every set of multiples does.

    The answer is complex.

Before meeting Faye I had as few as one and as many as four (Moonpie, Avis, Stella, and Corndog) - whicj was too many for me. Occasionally there have been three. I guess I typically had and was most comfortable with two.

With Lucy coming home this week we will have three for as long as fate seems fit.
    Andrew, Faye, Fitzi, and Lucy

Not gone, only gone on ahead - Bruno, Rex, BoJo, Kendal, Kingsley, Moonpie, Avis, Corndog, Stella, and now Achilles

    isn’t he though?

Not the right time but I can’t help thinking what a great 2nd dog he’d make. Always thought a beagle & Lab duo would be fun.
