"Is Your Labrador Steady / Obedient"?

    Aye Mates,
So ye think ye Labrador Retriever has been trained to be "steady", which we all know is based in foundational obedience - the cornerstone of all training. So put them at stay and let them see and hear a trio o' big Honkers fly by ye dog, low off the deck, honking loudly, swinging in at 30 yards, and either shooting with shotgun or camera, birds hitting the water. If ye retriever remains where ye ordered him or her to stay and has done so quietly until released, t'is a safe assumption ye have a nicely steadied retriever. If not, ye have LOTS more training to do. 😉

    Cheers,
    THE DOG WHISTLER 🍀

"CUPPING IN" - I recently captured this image o' a beautiful trio of HONKERS come flying by me at approximately 30 yards and low off the deck, incredible pressure on all but a truly steady retriever.

I don't think Lark would move for 3 big old Canada geese but let 3 dogs run by and she'd be gone in the blink of an eye.

i had someone make an interesting comment the other week. I had said that Scout, who is 10+yrs, and has been doing Obed and Rally since he was 3, and is also the most laid back sllooowww enthusiastic retriever i've ever seen, BROKE during a training session on the 2nd set of marks. I was astounded, he's never done it before.
The person (who is a hunt test judge) said that they have seen more Obed titled dogs break during WC and JR tests than any others. They are just so juiced up about the field work vs the Obed work that their very basic skill have gone out the window.

Coal does good, he'll watch the birds work, ears perked ready to go, but when one gets shot he's off like a rocket.

Last time we hunted a pit we had a big wad of spoonies come in and work the devoys for 5-10 mins before I shot one and he stayed steady untill it hit the water.

    Capttrae,
Then COAL is NOT steady and it will pay great dividends by completing that process in terms of better blind manners, more birds bagged when the action gets hot, and most importantly - for the safety of both COAL and others that ye hunt with.👍 Just saying.

While not trained for hunting, Archie had an awesome recall. I once tried calling him off a squirrel he was chasing and he did an immediate turn around and came to me. Sitting in a stay, not his thing as he wanted nothing more than to be next to me so if I moved all bets were off. Now, Katie, she's good but every once in a while she'll give me the finger and continue on her way.

If there's more than just me in the pit he stays tied untill everyone quits shooting.

And I'll agree with you 100% he's not fully trained by a long strech.

Tied in the pit is a good thing for safety if he is not steady and good on ye for that. Consider working on getting him steady. Every retrieve he makes without being sent on is rewarding the negative behavior of him busting off of the stay command. He should see lots of marks without being sent and be rewarded only when settled and steady. For every twenty marks thrown, let him have two retrieves randomly selected by you as to when he gets sent. It takes some work and patience, more so because he is already dysfunctional in this regard. You can do remedial work and correct what has been his norm by reshaping his behavior. It depends on how bad you want it for COAL.

Consider getting a good retriever program and following it closely.👍
