Pretty sure Fran is going blind.

Her eyesight is definitely becoming increasingly impaired. She is so so excited when we come home and for dinner but I swear, every time I move my hand, she thinks I'm throwing food at her and squats back. If it actually is food instead of a try to pet her, she can't catch it at all and then can't find it. She has also started restricting her movements to the living room, kitchen and bedroom and travels in a very predictable path. No more wandering through my husband's very cluttered office or hanging out under his desk.

Still lots of full body wags, running back and forth like a maniac, legs splayed, when we come home. So excited and active and she can get up and down the stairs with no problem. Fun and sweet as can be. Just kind of losing one thing at a time.

Oh, boy, can I identify with that.

How's her hearing? Has she developed anxiety to go along with the lesser sight? Hope things are still OK in these areas.

Is cataract surgery done on dogs? It's so quick with humans. If it is cataracts.

I'm pretty sure that's what was wrong with a friend's Bichon....he had surgery and had decent vision for a long time after.

I am so sorry to hear that. It's really tough seeing them get old.

If it's cataracts, yep, there is surgery for that. A neighbor's cocker spaniel went blind because of them, they told me they could do surgery, but it was a lot of money for them. The dog went blind at around 13, lived to be 17. She went for her walks every day, she did fine.

Poor Fran! Yes, cataract surgery is done on dogs but I would assume it is fairly expensive.

As I understand, blind dogs do very well as long as their environment is kept the same. A double check with the vet to see if that is the problem would be good. I know Fran has probably had her fill of the vet, poor girl.

Thank you everyone. She's not really a candidate for any additional surgeries but I'll definitely run it by her vets.

Poor Fran, getting old REALLY sucks!! Going blind AND being somewhat deaf will limit her activities, but I think she could adapt to the situation, dogs are so amazing at that.

Send lab board MOJO and prayers for Fran and for you.
