How has everyone stayed sane inside?

It’s too cold for walks! I tried a game of snow fetch in the backyard and Ben was ready to come inside after a few tosses. We played fetch/cuddle/wrestle inside until he was pooped and ended playtime with a raw egg—he was delighted! How have you been keeping your rascals busy? Can’t wait til it’s warm enough to get their zoomies out somewhere other than the living room

The silver lining to having dogs who've gotten older is that they want to sleep a lot.

Dan and I play "find it" with his toys when he seems to want to do something other than sleep or race around with his mama.

I don't know how cold it is there but I've taken Larky for short-ish walks even in temps below 20 degrees. She doesn't seem to mind the temps for short walks, no shivering. For her, playing the yard doesn't satisfy her the way a 20 minute walk does. Granted, I'm bundled up to the eyeballs, like Kenny from South Park, and I have these little hand warmer things in my gloves. If she doesn't get a walk she sits and whines at me and is generally a pest but 20 minutes or so and she's much happier. She's not a super hyper or super active dog but she does want to get out of the yard and catch up on the local "pee-mail".

I think she needs to lose a few lbs so I don't want to do training that require too many treats inside but I do have her practice her sit/stays while I go from room to room. Our house is on the small side but she follows me upstairs and down to the basement and sometimes I go up and down just to get her (and myself) moving.

Benji’s cold tolerance has definitely decreased with age—we're about two weeks away from his 10th bday so luckily he doesn’t need the walks the way he used to. We’ve been hit with a bitterly cold spell here with below zero temps and a windchill advisory, so there’s a safety concern too.

The last 5 days here in NE ohio it has been below 18 with negative wind chills. Woke up this morning to -3. Ugh. Asher still runs around in the back yard so he's getting some of the energy off. He wants to stay out there longer but I can tell his pads start to freeze because he runs back and dances at the door. I'm out there with him so the sooner we go in, the better for me. Samson on the other hand, won't stay out long but he's on leashed breaks right now and wants so bad to get his zoomies on. I just can't let him so I have to hold the leash tight. On saturday, I got them two Nylabones to keep them occupied. They normally don't get bones but I needed something. Samson is on strict rest and a restless 12 month old isn't a good combo inside. I'll hide the bones when I go back to work tomorrow. Supposed to have this weather through Sunday.

If your pup eats dry food, feeding them from a kibble ball that they have to push around or otherwise figure out how to get the food out of can prolong the meal and give them something to think about while they work for every last kibble.

Luckily Katie is pretty laid back. She walks around the yard checking it out but it's so cold, -9 this morning. She's ready to come in pretty quickly. She likes me to get down on the floor with her and play a gentle tug game. Got to say, I'm pretty lucky in that department.

One of the presents Santa brought Hemi is the Buster Activity mat. Plus he got 3 additional activities. This has really helped us.
if you have never seen the mat.

We’ve broken out the Kong wobbler and upped mini training sessions, but if I were dealing with 3 year old Kimber instead of 12 year old Kimber, I know she’d be driving us batty. I have a whole “walking Kimber in 0 degrees” wardrobe, and we used to do a lot of fetch. The toughest were icy days. She’d still want to run and play, but of course we had to limit her running/slipping on ice. This week is awful, but at least it’s dry!

Amazon owes you a finders fee, Jeff....just ordered one of these and a couple of attachments. Also a snuffle mat. The activity mat is on backorder but at least I'll have the attachments ready for use.

I know Dan will like these...not sure Sunnie will be brave enough to try them. We'll see.

    Thanks for posting!
