    Gagging On The Leash

Literally. We were getting ready to go out, Oban had his collar and leash on and he was gagging, with the leash in his mouth. What the heck? He likes to carry his leash in his mouth when we go out and he's never chewed on it. He never even chewed on the leash when he was a puppy just learning to walk on the leash. Why now, all of a sudden? I hauled the leash out of his mouth, we went to the car, got going. And he's gagging again. What the heck is this dog doing? He looked like he'd swallowed too much leash and couldn't get it up and out again.

OH has been walking him for a month and a half and OH put a knot in the leather leash to act as a grip stop. Oban must have gotten a tooth in the knot and been unable to get it out. He was darn near vomitting in the car. Weird the knot would be there for a month and a half and this doesn't happen till now, and it happens twice in a row. What a weird, freaky thing.

yeah, seems funny that it would happen for the first time, assuming OH has never seen it. I have a knot in our leather leash also, near the swivel hook, because it was starting to come unsewn where it folds back on itself. Lark often holds the knot in her mouth at the start of a walk. Now I'll know what's going on if she starts gagging.

Why would he be gagging on the leash if he did not chew and swallow any of it????? Is he coughing also? Maybe the collar is too tight or it is an excitement problem and his stomach is creating too much acid cause a reflux.

I really think he worked a tooth into the knot and got stuck. Jet did something similar years ago when a piece of stick wedged crosswise between her top teeth. She gagged to try to dislodge it. That might even be an involuntary reaction. She also pawed at her mouth, prompting me to reach in and pull out the stick.
