It is very sad that so many people either not being responsible enough to ensure they have a properly trained ESA (or one capable of being an ESA out in public) or lying about the ESA (though you do need a doctor's note - curious if they were not checkin those ... though possibly easy to try and forge). the bad eggs are ruining it for those who need it and respect common sense.

curious about this - while I agree; who exactly can sign this? can my vet? can my friend? any so called trainer? it's wayy too general to really help anything. not that i want to create hurdles for those truly needing an ESA.
♦A signed letter stating the animal is trained to behave without a kennel.

a duck! i understand other animal can be handy but sometimes I think people are just trying to be different for the hell of it.

I wouldnt mind seeing airlines offer free flights for the service animals but in a kennel below deck. its very easy to get a letter from doctor for emotional support...or maybe have a curtained off section for service animals and their owners(back rows of plain??)

service dog is not the same as emotional service dog. one is trained to provide help/assistance via task (and has public access rights). ESA has no public access rights and is not required to do anything but "be there" for their human. But yes you need a letter from a doctor for ESA (the only right it gives you is access to housing that doesn't otherwise allow dogs and to fly with their human - to be with them to offer "emotional support"). I'm not sure on the cost, if ESA flies free VS cargo (plus cargo has times of the year where you cannot safely fly a pet).

Since the documentation has to be presented 48 hours prior, there may be a checking phase. Though I am sure that can still be "fixed" too.

I don't think emotional support dogs should be allowed in the planes. They have not had to even pass a minimal test requirement like basic manurers. I think it is the Dr responsibility to only provide this documentation to those who really need it. The Laws towards end will likely change because of how many people are trying to get free rent in their apartments. I get so frustrated by how many fake service dogs there are. So much so I have started training business I go to their rights. Most places don't do a good job of educating their employees.

Ill stop now I have a lot to say on this matter not directly towards flying

Service animals in the US have gotten out of control. The other day I went to a restaurant and there was a woman seated inside with a dog on her lap. No doubt she told the restaurant the dog was a service animal. I believe the problem is twofold. First, most businesses don't understand what they are allowed to ask when trying to identify whether an animal is a legitimate service animal. And two, while I am not for increased government regulation, there is no licensing or certification for service animals which makes it easy for anyone to buy a certificate and service dog vest online and call their dog a service dog. I think there should be some kind of regulated certification and identification issued.
