    I tried a prong collar

I cannot believe how much Archie has manned up in the last few months. We had 2 good sessions with a trainer who has experience with Welshies. She, herself works with another trainer who competes with Welshies. So last week we had a session with a prong after giving a martingale collar a try. He did really well! Not sensitive at all. He's a complete hunting dog outside. The difference between his inside dog and outside dog is so dramatic I'm still impressed by it. I tried the collar on the walk on my own today. He had plenty of corrections on the walk but he also had some good stretches walking beside me. The goal is to ultimately transition to a martingale. All the videos I watched on the collar seemed so harsh that I didn't want to give it a chance. But my back went out so I can't have him pull me. The way the trainer taught me to use it was much more gentle yet effective. My hope has been restored!

Good news. I found when training the boys on the prong, I would let them forge ahead and I would stand and hold the leash super tight. They'd actually self correct, because I didn't pull or tug, I just played "post" and I'd be all sympathetic, "Oh no, what happened, better to stay at my side" and it clicked pretty quick because they made the connection themselves.

Yeah I'm trying to let him do his own correcting. If he persists then i do a short tug or stop. I'm just trying to focus on keeping it loose. A slower pace seems to be better.

Awesome!!!! I love prong collars. Have you seen this video I've posted in the past? It's a matter of teaching the dog to release pressure. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eB8dhKNichw

I use prong with gigi when we go to bass pro shop or some where very crazy. I never correct her alot now.

I use it a bit more when it is icy and black ice as a small tug from her is going to do me some pain. Even then I have worked on wait ,slow commands. Wait is for me to catch-up and slow is we are on black ice so slow down.

Plus my herniated disc flarwed up so prong on night walks when I am not sure where I am stepping on ice.

I also have good experience with a prong. It was like night and day when I first tried it, now Rocky knows when it's on, no more pinching needed.
I only use it when we go shopping to meet and greet people, but that's my choice.
Would recommend to anyone that's got 80+ lbs on the end of a leash.

That's a good video. The trainer and I took it straight outside. Archie is in hunt mode as soon as the door opens. Getting his attention is a tricky endeavor. BUT the trainer had a good method to reduce stimulation for his nose. Walk him on the road! Obviously you need a quiet safe street. But keeping him away from the side walks and grass, dirt, etc really helps.

I finally tried a prong on Samson after some exposure to prongs in training class with Asher. First correction he looked at me with the big brown eyes --- just stabbing through me. After the initial correction, it was amazing how he self corrected. Samson is a puller and with his left knee, I had to do something. We do our weekly swim sessions and we have to walk through an obedience class to get to the pool. The prong collar works perfectly. With Asher, I just put the prong on but use the martingale. I think it's the feel of the prong the keeps him in check.

I've used prongs with all of mine at some point and have had lots of success with no one minding it. Some have graduated sooner than others, but they all eventually were able to move to buckle collars ... well, Sass is still a work in progress at times, but even she is getting there.
