Ferris is going to Guide Dog College!

And I have so many conflicting feelings! We've had him since September 2016, when he was 8 weeks old. He's a black lab from Guide Dogs of America here in Southern California. He's made it through all the health, temperment and obedience testing so far.

On Saturday we'll go have lunch at GDA, and then find out who his "roommate" in the kennels will be. (Dogs go in for training in groups, so my guess is there will be about 20 dogs going in.) We'll walk them down to the kennels, and say goodbye. Ugh. It kills me to even write that!

I'm so proud of him! He's kind of a tiny guy at only 57 lbs, and he is SO chill. Nothing startles him. As the trainers at GDA say, now it's up to him to decide if he wants to be a guide or not.

(And yes, we are getting another puppy to raise in mid-February. I don't have specifics yet, but I will soon!)

Congrats! Wishing Ferris the best. If he makes it through and gets paired up with a person, you'll really cry with pride at the graduation ceremony! They are really moving events.

Thanks! Yes, I cry at the graduation ceremonies even when it's NOT my dog up there, so I can't imagine how I'll get through being on stage with him. I really hope I find out, though!

Good for you for doing a great job with Ferris. Someone is going to get a great guide dog and faithful companion. It takes special people to do the job of raising and teaching the basics to a guide dog and then allow him/her to leave you and go on to their next steps in training.

God bless you, Ferris, the Guide dog group and the lucky person who will get him.

Ha! He absolutely loses his mind when we arrive at the GDA campus because he loves the kennels so much, so this is good advice for him!

That's amazing. I'm so impressed and yes, proud, of you! I cry just watching videos of people handing over their raised puppies for Guide Dog School. Thank you for your work and service to our greater community.
