    No Walks Today, Too ICY

It's a rare day that weather keeps us from walking but we are not going out today. It's SO icy. Oban does not need to slip and twist his already wonky elbow and I don't need to challenge my nearly healed ankle. Oban, of course, needs to out to bathroom and he has already slipped. I could wear my Yaktraks but there's nothing for Mr. Crazy, Let's Run Full Tilt Down the Trail ANYWAY Dog.

yeah ice has always been what stops us. and extreme heat (though at least that is fine for potty breaks!)

I'm curious how my lunchtime run will go (or ... not go! i forgot my grippers)

I'm always surprised when people take their dogs to the parks when they are icy. The humans wear grippers but it's still dangerous even for healthy dogs to slip and get hurt.

From Saturday through Tuesday, my back yard was literally like an ice rink. I wouldn't let my pet sitter let Samson out Monday and Tuesday. I had to take him out on very tight leash. In 12 years, I have never experienced that. We had about 6" of snow on the ground and then on Saturday, we had freezing rain all day. It was crazy! It was 60 yesterday and it all melted. Now it's mud. Good decision on no walking. I noticed a few folks out in my neighborhood attempting to walk their dogs. Watching how they were gently stepping, I figure they realized they made a mistake and probably should not be out.

We bumped into a woman walking two small dogs this morning and I commented on how proudly the one dog carried her tail. She said that the other one used to carry hers like that, too, but she broke hers, falling on ice. Ouch!

She called them Shiba Wawas. (Shiba inu/Chihuahua)

and I get it can happen just trying to get them to pee. But there is a different between "gotta let the dogs pee at least" and "let's go spend an hour at the dog park running on ice"

I was 65 yesterday, and in the 60's today here, but it's been raining off and on all week. It' been almost impossible to keep the mud off of the dogs. It's worse with Brooks whom I do a good bit of field training with. We were supposed to go to a group field training day tomorrow, but the high is going to be around freezing. Probably not going to go. The ground will be a cold, muddy, probably icy mess. Can't take a chance on Brooks getting hurt.

Yaktraks- I forgot I have some of those and we've had a couple of ice storms. I can let Lark go out in the yard and if I tell her Gentle or Slow Down, she usually goes carefully for a dog, no running jumps up or off the steps. We skipped the walks outside of the yard but if I have on the yaktraks, I could probably walk on the street and let her walk on the ground just for a little variety. I haven't landed flat this year but I have in the past. Of course, I'd be OK with no more ice this year.

Shiba Wawas- that's awful. I wonder if someone actually bred them together on purpose. I think shiba inus are so cute with their little foxy selves that I'd hate to see them bred with something else anyway. I don't know what their personalities are like but they are cute.

P.S. Barry, I think Brooks isn't the only one who shouldn't risk getting hurt! >>"Can't take a chance on Brooks getting hurt."<<

Ice this year has been the worst I remember in a while in NH, not so bad in Mass. The last month has been hell with the dogs (and humans) and trying to prevent injuries...

Can't wait for this stuff to melt.

Id take some of your colder weather. But no Ice for me not even on a good day. I think if I lived where you guys teal with this stuff I d have to have a long leash and let the dogs out slowly.
