It all depends. When we lost our 3 older labs, we always had other labs in the house, so we weren't looking to replace them right away. And when Tickle was offered to us, I just said YES...we weren't looking for another lab at that point.

When Wrigley our Griff passed in November, I had a deposit out with a breeder by the end of the month. But we won't have the actual puppy until the fall, so it will be almost a year until a new Griff is in the house.

I can't imagine only having 1 dog and losing them and how it must feel. I don't really feel guilty when we add a new dog to the family since we have a big family!

This was me: "I am NOT getting another dog anytime soon. Maybe in like 2 years" Two weeks later I was looking at breeders. 2.5 months later we had a new pup [emoji38]

After our Dalmatian, Patch, passed it was so hard with no dog in the house. After 3 months, I remember vividly the time, I walked out of the kitchen and told DH I can't stand the silence, no paws padding around the house. Started my quest and had our first lab, Potion, about 4-5 weeks later. She was a senior. After that, seniors just seem to have dropped in out laps at just the right time. I've never felt guilty about getting another but more honoring those who have gone ahead. It was only weeks after Archie passed and the opportunity for Katie arose. It was either get her then because of our crazy weather or wait till spring. Needless to say, we were on the road.

Ok, is it fair to ask for DMs on great breeders and ones to stay away from? The breeder I picked was recommended off of this board, and now im getting second thoughts. :-(...... Also the deposit wont be cashed until the puppy is 6 Weeks old, so I guess basically I have put my foot in the door for a pup. A huge selling point was I could give their dog back at any time. I thought that was touching.

Others on this board will know more about breeding than I. Having said that, you should at least look for full health clearances (and there are many), see the parents in person if possible and/or other siblings from a repeat breeding, talk to other owners of pups from the breeder, talk to breeder many times and see if there is a comfort factor and they openly answer your questions, and in the end, go with your gut because it's a big decision. Getting a pup from most good breeders would not be an issue, but you should still do your homework.

    Good Luck

I'd like to see that happen. Whatever dog comes to you will have hit the lottery. I am so moved by Rocky's passing and it was your great ownership that did it...

You have to PM about breeders. Why second thoughts? You can discuss those here as long as you don't identify the breeder. All good breeders will ask that they have first rights to the dogs they bred and then some sketchy breeders say that also and then don't follow through. I'd be concerned if a breeder said they wouldn't, but I would not let that clause in and of itself sway me. That can be an empty promise. I've seen it plenty of times where something goes awry and a breeder will conveniently disappear.

If you need help, PM me. Reputable breeders DO make a big point of saying they'll always take the pup back at any time for any reason. But there is more to it than that. Clearances, what they do with their dogs etc. But like I said, if you want, PM me and I can try to guide you.
