I bought a Champion Outfitters Survivor belt about a year ago. It's well made, has a nice padded harness, and connects to a standard shoulder belt. Lola is great in the car, and mostly sits and looks out the window or sleeps. She hates it (and so do I) because it does not allow any movement or readjustment. She turns around a couple of times to get comfortable and she's all wound up. A hammock or crate option would be better in my view.

I'm not a big fan of dog "seat belts" They are just harnesses connected to a handle short leash. We only trust crates. You could get a pet barrier for the back of your car...

I do not understand how a hammock can protect your dog, or you for that matter, in the event of an accident. If I am missing something could someone please explain to me how they work and how they would keep your dog safe?

I think it helps keep the dog from flying through the front window. (Key word "Helps")

Considering the dog would become an extremely heavy, flying projectile in an auto accident I just don't see it being a safety feature.

They probably don't but we only have sedans so its all we have to work with.

FWIW we just bought a new mobile crate from Tractor Supply for $99. It is their largest size and the next step down is $69. They seem well made compared to the ones I saw at Petco and PetSmart which are much more expensive. They can be taken down into two parts for cleaning or storing and get plenty of air flow through them. It has a nice front gate that is spring loaded for one handed operation. The only thing I do not like is that the largest ones do not have any handles or a way to grab onto it to move it around. I am going to install some cheap nylon rope for handles.

So with a crate, the dog is going to only go flying 2' or 3' in any direction and hit the side of the crate upon impact? Nothing seems that safe, aside from a padded cell.

A properly-sized crate for the car should allow the dog to comfortably turn around but shouldn't allow for so much space that they are flying around inside there. Nothing is foolproof, but if people have space in their cars for a crate IMO it's the safest option.
