If You Wanna Pet my Dog You Might Get a Bloody Hand

LOL, I warned two men we met yesterday who wanted to pet Oban. One had met him before but was still a bit taken aback. I had just smushed a deer fly off Oban's nose and it was full of blood. Worse, blood continued to bubble out of his poor little nose. They both gave him a pet anyway but watched out for blood, which would likely stain if it got on their clothes. This is early for deer fly bites, for us. Heck, the black flies have barely started.

Deer flies start to be a nuisance at daybreak in our local park close to the beginning of July. In warmer years, I've noticed them in early June. They're nasty little buggers...and the main reason I apply DEET when I go for my morning walk.

My Hershey and Honey used to be afraid of them (had a good doggy insecticide that I put sparingly on their ears). It was cruel but sometimes I'd go "bzzzzt" near an ear and be rewarded with a jump. Bad owner!

On reading the subject I thought 'What on earth? Has Oban turned into a bloodthirsty attack dog?'

Fortunately no deerflies yet but I have seen a few blackflies. There's a very serious tick problem at my workplace. Came across a CBC article about this web site.

We also use DEET, as well as a concoction of essential oils.

It was the man from this previous thread I Need Dog and his friend. I think one reason he looked startled was he was right down with his arms around Oban the last time we met. Yeah, I thought I'd make the title provocative.

Barb, the bugs have to be really, really bad before they will give me a go. Apparently poor Oban is much more appealing to them.
