    Which One is Smarter?

My vegetable garden is fenced so Oban won't go in and help himself. He's 10 years old and I still need to have the fence up. Jet learned after one year of fence, when she was a puppy, that the garden was off limits. She'd patiently lie along the edges hoping I'd throw a carrot or beet out to her, which I did when they were ripe. Whisper was the same except she would leeaaannnn way off the patio stones down the middle and pick what she could from there. It's amazing how far a little ESS can reach.

So who is displaying more thought process, more intelligence?

Oban - fence down means he can go in. If I wanted him out I'd fence it. His thoughts, not mine.

Jet - fence up or down, she would not go in.

Whisper - fence down, she would not go in but she seemed to figure as long as her feet stayed out she could reach all she liked.

I don't think it's about intelligence. I think it's all about personality. Fran was one of the smartest dogs I have ever encountered but the only connection she made to not taking food was if we weren't around. She actually thought that it was our presence in the room that mattered. And if she got "caught" she would just look at us like, "What? I waited until you left the room. What is your problem?"

All 3 of them are very smart knowing that FOOD grows in the garden, lol!

All our dogs, past and present, know exactly where we plant the carrots and beans and make a bee-line for them when they're allowed in our fenced-in garden to help me weed.
