On our way south down the trail Harley pops out at us as he starts north, at the bottom of the stairs. Oban and Harley, who is a HUGE yellow Lab, have a few sniffs and each is content to continue his own way, with his owner. We turn back north to go home and of course we meet Harley again, who has turned back south. But this time the dogs see each other well in advance of meeting and here is where it gets interesting.
First, silly nuts, they both act like this is a brand new meeting, seemingly having forgotten they passed not 15 minutes earlier. Harley is clearly pleased, says Woof, takes a few running steps toward us, his head well lowered and his tail low too but wagging madly. Oban abandons his sniffs, picks up his pace to meet Harley and Oban's neck and tail are held high, his tail wagging too. They meet again, have a few playful bounces and Harley mounts Oban. Harley is a humper but it seems to be in fun, not dominance or sex and certainly not aggression. Oban says Growly Get off me you stupid bugger. Harley does, they bounce and play some more and Harley tries again, Oban simply evades him, they're both smiling and wagging and then go on their way.
No wonder we mere humans have a hard time figuring out what dogs think, so many conflicting displays.

Weird, but they seem to get it.
