      Therapist Standing By...

An ad popped up on a NYTimes page I was looking at for United Support Animals. The text read:

Keep your pet in no-pet policy housing & fly with your pet in the plane cabin for free
No pet fees or deposits. No Breed Restriction. Money Back Guarantee. Therapist standing by

It's hard enough for airlines to keep up with legitimate service animals without companies such as this one, ready to certify your pet tarantula that must be allowed to crawl all over you during the flight, as a support animal.

But he's my support animal, a therapist said so...

ROFL, but seriously the people with legitimate service animals have a tough time. This company should be reported to the Better Business

Bureau!!!! And the therapist should have his/her license revoked.

Oh... so irritating!!! Like an idiot, last year, I went to Atlanta from the WEST coast, with a couple of changes of planes, with my 93 year old mother. There were dogs all over the place. Some in a panic trying run from the crowds, almost all of them unable/unwilling to walk on lead. Then, while waiting for TSA to clear my mom's carry on (did you know that a big canister of Benefiber looks just like a bomb?) I watched a big burly guy with a golden wearing the Support dog vest, etc. I was very jaundiced about the whole dog thing by this time. But TSA made him sit the dog, take vest and collar off, then after they'd looked at those items, walk the dog through the metal detectors... then re-dress the dog. The golden was like an obedience machine. I figured this guy must be a veteran... maybe PTSD. I can imagine he'd REALLY need some help to get through the crowds at airports.

And hooray for TSA. The fake dogs would have pissed themselves and started a wrestling match with their owners if they'd tried to perform for the same inspection routine.

I can just imagine how far I'd get trying to get Rocket Dog through an airport and onto a plane in her fake Support Dog vest. (It's a long story.) I think she'd be OK ignoring the other fake dogs 'cause we've worked long and hard on that. But OMG, you cannot un-friendly-love-me-love-me-you-look-like-you-really-need-love-today-here-let-me-give-you-a-big-sloppy-kiss this dog. She would make the TSA grope-and-grab pat down look utterly non-invasive by comparison.

BTW: I also saw TSA bomb dogs on duty. They do NOT alert to dietary fiber products.

This stuff really upsets me. I have a really good track record for calling out people in Costco I wait till they at the register and embrace them. The manager has thanked me several times. My biggest concern is things can get a lot harder for people who really need service dogs.

That's exactly the point. I'm sure it will get harder if this nonsense is allowed to continue.

I would point out, however, that it used to be easier to ship a dog as cargo. In the old days I did it fairly frequently, getting my dog to and from a pro in the South East for training during our long, cold winters. Lots of airlines no longer will ship a dog.

I don't know if that has contributed to this phenomenon.

Its hard enough needing a service dog. People don't think. I think the hole emotional support animal thing needs to go away.
