    Interpreting Cat and Dog Competition

Most nights I get down on the floor for a play with the cats but big blunderbuss Oban butts in and throws himself down in front of me for a wrassle. The cats scatter but I noticed the the other night that Lucy, while I'm down play growling and telling Oban, "I'm gonna getcha, I'm gonna bite you," Lucy really does come in close and bites Oban on his bum. I think what Lucy is saying is, "Get lost dog, I was here first." Derri's tactic is different. She waits till Oban leaves and has taken to throwing herself down just as he did. It's as if Derri is saying, "OK, if this is how you want to play, this is how you play with the dog, well I'll do the same thing, now wrassle with ME." They are so cute.

I don't think I ever noticed competition between Dan and Charlie but Charlie was very dog-like and was a good role model for Dan in many ways. Dan also adopted a lot of cat tendencies, too. It was fun to watch them play bitey-face (Dan has excellent bite inhibition)...they were truly best buddies.

(Just so you know...especially since I really miss my Charlie...I get a lot of enjoyment from your cat or cat/dog stories.)
