Had Barley out with us at lunch today and an older couple came by and asked if they could pet him. Sure, we’re here for socialization after all. Barley was a perfect angel for a 5 month old lab. As they walked by us as they left I heard the husband taking the wife into stopping by the shelter to see if they had any puppies. Not sure how to feel about that!

Gosh, if they only knew what a great start your puppy got because of his breeders, and then you.... They won't be getting a Barley from the shelter unfortunately.

I tried twice to adopt labs from rescues but was denied. I was told because I'm single and work I was not a candidate for adoption. Puppies should go to families. I told them I had a pet sitter all lined up. I was so depressed and stopped looking. That was 2006. I got Samson in 2012.

My friend just got a puppy on impulse last week and guess who is going twice a week to train. She even asked if I'd keep the puppy till it was house trained.

Yep, that “immediate gratification” expectation carries over into training. That couple doesn’t know all the time and effort you put into Barley and Thor. We ran into that a lot with Kimber. People-even close friends- would say, “Oh, Kimber’s so well behaved, I want a dog like her/I wish my dog was like her.” But then they’d act like we were bananas for spending so much time and money on exercising and training her. “ Oh, I could never do that.” Then you ain’t going to get a Kimber result, folks!

I think most of these people are very well meaning and sincere with their desires, but realistically they have no idea what goes into raising a puppy. Like many here, I can't count the number of folks who come up to me saying they wish their dog was as well behaved and trained. When I explain to them the amount of time and effort that goes into training they are truly shocked.

I waited 3 years from the time I asked my friends for a puppy until I got Sophie. There were many times I was temped to find a puppy during my wait, and I purposely avoided looking for breeders and possible litters close to me. I knew if I saw one of those little fluff balls I would have gotten one. Getting Bruce was very much an impulsive action. I wasn't really ready for a puppy, but I liked the mating so much, I knew the pups would be something special.

I ended up learning about and buying from breeders because I had been denied puppies from shelters, too! I was once denied an adult cat who'd been in a shelter for a year because my one year old dog had balls. LOL! "Adopt, don't shop!"

Man... you could get a whole massive thread going with the title "What's with these shelter operations????" This is maybe 20 years ago. I was a graduate student in the department of Cellular Molecular Biology/Biochemistry at our University here. A postdoctoral fellow had a cat that she'd had literally her whole life. She couldn't remember a time she didn't have this cat. He had to have been over 25 when he died. After a decent amount of time she went to the humane shelter and filled in the application to adopt a cat. They turned her down because she did research. (Let me add, she was a published author. They could have looked up her area of research.... she grew antibodies up in chicken eggs. It was a crock.) Their immediate assumption was (1) reputable science is done on mongrel animals whose genetic make-up is completely unknown and (2) a biological scientist will lie through his/her teeth to get a cheap source of tissue. And probably (3) she wanted to torture a cat.

    Bull Sh1t.

You really get the idea it's not about rescuing animals any more.

But I digress and don't want to hijack the thread.

Some time ago I was told by a friend that they were going to lose a dog and she wanted to get a good Labrador. I was in contact with Windy Canyon and kept passing info to these people and trying to educate them about what a good breeder was and the value of getting a healthy, well-balanced puppy. After months, they told me they'd gotten a 6 month old lab-mix from Craig's List. The dog is a basket case. Now they're asking me how to fix the problems they'd never have had if they'd stuck with their original plan and waited for the right dog.

Sorry to hear that. I think I remember....

I had a guy not long ago who seemed to say all the right things (at first), though he was clearly looking for a clone of his recently deceased girl (kind of scary to breeders since we know it's unlikely). He seemed to have found his perfect lab in a black female litter mate to Barry's Brooks, interestingly enough! Made sure I understood they were wealthy and that he knew exactly what he wanted (ie, would he ever accept the breeders' pick for him?). The man went on to add at the end of his initial email, "Perhaps I should say that both dogs were given to us and we have never purchased a dog, but would be willing to in the right circumstances.". Yikes. Like this breeding thing is cheap.

I told him Kanzi would be his girl since she's small, but that I may not be breeding her again for over a year if heat cycles don't agree w/ my seasonal Ag testing/ consulting work. So it may be 2020.... Sent him on to my breed club's site. Comes back to say he's coming thru the following Monday (the beginning of my 7 day a week work last week) and wants to meet mom-to-be sometime midday. I had to say I am sorry, but due to my work (ie, what keeps me afloat here), I could not commit to being here for a visit that day. His response was if I couldn't "take the time to meet w/ them" (afterall, they don't come over to this side often!), he'd have to strike Windycanyon from his list. Oh and told me good luck w/ my "multiple" businesses. Really? If dog breeding is a business here, then I'm a p*** poor business owner I guess since I've yet to make a profit from that. My Ag consulting, otoh, has provided me a living. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr........ Suffice to say I'm really happy to send this type of person on their merry ways.
