      Question Microchip annual renewal?

      Might be a silly question....

What is the norm for microchips annual renewal or pay once and done?

A while back I saw an ad for an outfit that claimed to register chips for a one time fee avoiding the annual fee charged by Home Again and others.

      Any thoughts?

Our vet implants Home Again chips. Any thoughts one that brand?

Our Lizzy was found by animal control without tags or chip. No one claimed her for 10 days so she was available for adoption. So this issue hits a nerve for me at the moment.

I never heard of paying anually. I think you only pay a one time fee and that's it.

I don't pay annually. Once and done. I'm listed on my dogs' chips and so is their breeder in case I can't be reached for some reason.

No annual fee here either. I am listed on my dogs chips as are my kids, just in case.

No fee here...breeder had her chipped and the vet scans it every time to make sure it's still in position.

So I must be getting fleeced paying Home Again $19 a year for each tag. Glad I asked!

What company and / or registry is used by most?

I had Home Again with one of my dogs and didn't renew the annual fee. She's still in the database, and I can access her profile to update information, such as an address change. I still get the email alerts when a dog goes missing in my area too. I think the annual 'membership' is overkill.

The power of suggestion is a common advertising ploy. Suggest something that never was the case by saying that your product either has it or doesn't have it. This might be one of those cases. I have never paid more than the first fee when the chip was inserted. Not to say Home Again doesn't have annual renewals but wouldn't you get renewal notices? And it would be in your paperwork somewhere?

Now that I think of it, chipping seems to be a great bargain when I consider the company is going to keep Lexie's number on file for the next 20 years or so. Lexie cat was done last Saturday. My Vet records the number too and my township. For $25.

We have Home again also. The one-time fee to implant the chip is all you need to pay, the chip will be active in their database forever. The yearly fee is for a separate program that would assist you in finding your dog if he or she was ever lost. They would make flyers for you, etc.

I think if you do some digging on the Home Again site, you'll find that the annual renewal of the chip isn't really that but extra services. Otherwise, the one time fee covers the dog's # in the database in case it's lost. Just like Avid or the AKC chip a lot of vets are using. I like the AKC one, it seems cheaper and you can update the info online. With Avid/Petrac, I have to call them everytime we move.
