Have no idea if there is any basis there, but I do like to be able to stick my finger in there if I do need to clean. So far, it's a seldom occurrence that I have ear gunk.
Well, I just deliberately annoyed my sleeping dog on behalf of this post.

I have medium sized female hands/fingers, I think (definitely not small). I just stuck my thumb in Sunnie's ear and had a lot of room to spare all around. And it needs to be remembered that Sunnie's head is considerably smaller than that of a Lab. We are talking seriously cavernous canals. I think one of the reasons Dan likes licking Sunnie's ears so much is because he can bury his snipy little nose in there. It's like checking people's pockets...he's always hopeful that he'll find something good in there.

(One of the vets once remarked that she didn't really need a scope to see in...the light from the overhead lamp was almost enough.)
