    Training box? What is this?

I just so happened to glance down my neighbour's driveway the other day and noticed he had his husky-type dog sitting in a box. The box was made of wood, and was big enough for the dog to sit in it (not lay down) and his head was poking out the top.

I can't for the life of me figure out what this thing is. Would it be for some sort of training purpose? Anyone ever heard of using something like this?

My immediate reaction was that it looked cruel to leave the dog sitting in that thing and I can't imagine what kind of lesson it would teach, but please let me know if I'm wrong!

I'd have to see a photo. My dogs love boxes and hop in and out of them any chance they get. Perhaps that was the case here. If the dog's head could poke out, he could probably get in/out on his own, especially a husky (assuming the dog is young and healthy).

Have to see what the box looks like but sounds like platform training. At least thats what comes to mind. It is a great and useful training. Very awesome for getting heal or teach a dog to go to other sides and front and so on. Dog love boxes and platforms. then gravitate towards them hence used in training. We do it at dog scouts. Great in canine musical freestyle.

Hemi has 4 platforms, you can do a lot with them, it is a great way to teach them to go out to a place, the place is the platform. You can teach them all 4 sides. Heel, Right, Front and Rear. They will go to the platforms.

Then again if they are just leaving the dog in the box then I dunno. However Hemi has been taught to get inside boxes, just for fun, makes him engage different parts of his brain. He likes getting in them too. He would do it on his own when younger.

We played with boxes too, in training. But was the owner with the dog? I can see doing training in the driveway, but wouldn't the owner be close? Maybe the dog is part cat, I've heard huskies seem to be, and just hopped in on it's own.

Chase was always fond of getting into boxes, too. He'd have lived in one happily, as long as he still got fed.

We use platforms for training too, but they are solid, not a box that the dog can get into it. Just something they can sit on.

Yeah Hemi's are all solid too. But we did do boxes at Dog scouts once for problems solving they had to get all 4 paws in the box, but the box was smaller than natural 4 legs stand. Hemi crushed the box, he got in with all 4 legs then decided to sit down. Cardboard gave way.

Thanks for all the interesting input!

To clarify a few questions - the owner was nowhere in sight, the dog was just sitting in the box. The head hole was neck high, so I doubt he could hop in and out, and there was very little room in the box for anything other than his body in the sitting position.

There are two dogs, both often tied to the fence outside. I was worried he was maybe using the box to correct something the dog had been doing while being tied out, barking or charging or something...
