My yellow boy, Brooks, came from a chocolate sire and a black dam. I bred one litter of puppies way back in 1985, sire was yellow, dam was black, we had 3 blacks, 3 chocolate and 3 yellows. One of the yellows didn't survive. The genetics of all this makes my head hurt.

Yes...it's amazing..the genetics of it all!
All that matters, is that they are all healthy!

For there to be a yellow from a black parent, (the sire) he must carry a yellow gene, so we know the sire is black carrying yellow. EeBB (By) For a there to be a chocolate from a black parent, he must carry chocolate EEBb. Now if the one parent is black and has yellow and chocolate offspring, then we know he carries both yellow and chocolate EeBb (Byc) ). Keep this in the back of your mind.
For there to be a black from a yellow parent (the dam) she was either bred to a black dog (as above) or a chocolate dog (a yellow to chocolate mating would result in an all black litter is they are both pure for yellow and chocolate respectively, most people do not realize this. Yellow and chocolate are recessive to black, which is dominant) For there to be a chocolate from a yellow parent, she must carry chocolate eeBb (Cy)
So the black sire carries yellow and chocolate, (Byc) and the yellow dam carries chocolate (Cy). So you see it is a complicated series of color inheritance for there to be all three colors in one litter.
Oh and one more thing, the yellow will have black pigment because the sire is black, and his black pigment is dominant. If they were both yellow carrying chocolate or vise versa, the yellow puppy would inherit a liver nose color, (commonly and erroneously referred to as a "dudley"), because there was not a black parent to give black pigment.
One of my litters, I bred a black carrying chocolate (EEBb) to a black carrying yellow EeBB, one male went to a show home and he was black, and carries yellow (from the dam) and chocolate (from the sire), I kept two puppy gurls, one was dominant black (EEBB), she inherited just the black color genes, and one (Friday) was black carrying chocolate (EEBb) she inherited the chocolate color gene from her sire. I had them DNA color tested at 7 weeks of age, because I wanted to know. :-)
Clear as mud? :-)

So sweet! Is that chocolate in the front enormous or is that a perspective issue?

Just because this stuff makes my head hurt too, isn’t it the case that the yellow could have either black or liver depending on which gene was inherited from the father (since he is Byc)? We had this with Mulder - he was bred to a yellow female. It was a performance litter, so no one really cared about color, and no color testing was done in advance. We knew he was at least By because his father was yellow, we knew the dam was yellow, so we were expecting blacks and yellow but there was an unexpected chocolate (who unfortunately didn’t survive). Some of the yellows in that litter had black pigment and some liver.
The chocolate on Mulder’s side was from at least 3 generations back, and on the dam’s side it was at least 5 generations back so we were quite surprised. I never had Chloe color tested because we knew the sire of her girls didn’t carry chocolate so it wasn’t an issue although I am kind of curious whether she got the chocolate gene and passed it to the yellow girls. If/when we decide to breed them I might get them tested depending on the color of the potential baby daddy, but since his existence is completely hypothetical at this point I haven’t bothered yet.

I didn't know Kimber had passed. I am so very sorry to hear that. She held a special place in my heart as her birthday was 06/25/2005, the day after Thea's birthday. You guys also had the same AHA moment with the incessant barking at night when Kimber and Thea were pups. The second we brought them into the bedroom to sleep, everyone slept through the night without a peep.
So all in one post, my sincerest condolences and sincerest congratulations!
