We had this with Mulder - he was bred to a yellow female. It was a performance litter, so no one really cared about color, and no color testing was done in advance. We knew he was at least By because his father was yellow, we knew the dam was yellow, so we were expecting blacks and yellow but there was an unexpected chocolate (who unfortunately didn’t survive). Some of the yellows in that litter had black pigment and some liver.

The chocolate on Mulder’s side was from at least 3 generations back, and on the dam’s side it was at least 5 generations back so we were quite surprised. I never had Chloe color tested because we knew the sire of her girls didn’t carry chocolate so it wasn’t an issue although I am kind of curious whether she got the chocolate gene and passed it to the yellow girls. If/when we decide to breed them I might get them tested depending on the color of the potential baby daddy, but since his existence is completely hypothetical at this point I haven’t bothered yet.
Yes of course! I thought I said that, but maybe I wasn't clear. :-)

We're settled on a black girl, so we have 3 to choose from. DH wants one that seems smart, I want one that seems affectionate. I've shared this with the breeder and hope that one of the pups has both qualities!

I'm just reading your signature.. Im sorry for your loss. I too lost Abbs this year, and as you know, it is so hard. Hopefully these pups will fill the void in our lives that a dog brings Im excited to see your pictures.
