    Oban's Sore Elbow - Phooey

Many of you know Oban put his leg through the crust on the snow over four years ago and hurt his elbow. I knew it would steadily worsen. But Oban's Vet was worried yesterday about how badly/quickly it has deteriorated since he hurt it Labour Day. She said the "C" word. We Xrayed and it looks like only fast developing arthritis but she's sending it off to radiologist just to be sure.

WE'd been walking with two one year old pups and there's no reason to think rough play has caused this. In fact the acute episode on Labour Day followed a time without walking with them, and a long car ride. But I've told them both we will not walk together again, just in case. One day last week we met three ladies with 8 dogs between them and no sign of hurt to Oban. But he knows and likes the two one year olds and sometimes it's even Oban who Starts the play. Sad and frustrating. He just turned 11 years, he thinks it was 11 months and until he moves other people think so too.

Hugs to you and Oban. After her injury, Kimber would look startled when her body wasn't doing what she obviously thought it would do. For a very long time, she pushed herself with no thought to her limitations. Gotta love that joie de vivre- except when you have to step in and keep the joie under control.

Fingers and paws crossed for no "c" mentions again.

Cookie’s bad elbow is dubble the size of his normal elbow, but x-rays have showed just bad BAD bad arthritis. I am certain the vet is exaggerating with the C word.

We have stopped walks with young dogs a long time ago, also limiting running/jumping. Of course I allow him to run ocassionaly.

Supplements and heat compressions seem to really work for now, we’ve been managing this for more than a year, it also appears to get worse when the weather changes.

    No bad words allowed!!!

My two haven't been allowed to play together outside for years...someone always came up limping. I still let them do whatever they want in the house, though...they can't build up much speed but they do act really crazy. They're dogs. I tell myself that indoor fun is part of quality time.

VEt got the radiology report back last night at 11:00 pm and it came from PEI which meant the radiologist sent it at midnight. Impressive. And our appt. with the Vet was for afternoon yesterday, so these good people are really working. BUT, it's confounding. The radiologist agrees she does not see cancer but feels the arthritic growth is too dramatic and sudden and big for arthritis. It just doesn't change that fast in less than 2 months. Vet is going to ask another radiologist, one she went to school with, for yet another opinion. We may do a biopsy by fine needle aspiration, guided by ultrasound, not very invasive. Oban will need sedation. He was so good yesterday, they like to have patients sedated for Xrays but Oban loves this Vet, trusts her, and they were able to do him awake. He's such a good boy.

How frustrating! I hope radiologist #2 has a more favorable opinion.

    Sending good thoughts.

And I don’t know about on x-rays but I can tell you that when my arthritic toe got worse, it got worse VERY quickly, including developing a big bony overgrowth in a short period of time, so it can happen, I guess.
