    Puppy Diaries: Day 3

    Theme: Baby Steps!

Welcome back to my Adventures with Brand New Puppy. At this age, the puppy in the morning is often very different from the puppy at the end of the day. Case in point: when I left for work yesterday, Stormy was scared of the wood floors and wanted to stay in the den. We were carrying her through the house and down the back steps to the yard. DH put out the mats we used with Kimber post-injury, and by the evening, Stormy was scampering at full puppy speed through the house. The confidence she gained from the mats transferred to all flooring, and suddenly the whole house is now open to her! To hear puppy feet again is so lovely.

    Steps Part 1 (Literal)

Before dinner, I carried her down the 7 steps from the deck to the yard for a potty session. She did her business and scampered back to the steps. Without a backwards glance, she then bunny hopped all the way up to the deck! When I asked DH, "Why didn't you tell me she's doing steps?" and he said, "Because I didn't know she could!"

    Steps Part 2 (Metaphorical)

At bedtime I put her in the crate, and after about 10 minutes of outrage, she fell asleep! And stayed that way for 3 hours! This morning, I put her in the crate for naptime and for 2 hours she slept without a peep!

    Reflections

I'm so very thankful I asked the board for suggested puppy schedules. We're using a modified version of Mighty Thor's and Jeff's, and it's a life saver. Having set times for play and naps is making it so much easier to enjoy her. We have guaranteed down time so we can recharge. It's also making it possible for DH to get work done!

She's been mouthy, of course, but she's starting to get bitey. I'm hoping to go out this afternoon and buy more chew toys.

    Apologies

Yesterday was dark and rainy so not very conducive for photos. Here's what I got!

Sounds like you are adjusting to HER schedule just fine!!

Seriously, you are doing a great job with Stormy, she is adapting well and learning quick. You will have a well trained dog that you can be very proud of. I hope she fulfills all of your expectations of a true Labrador Retriever.
