    Luna Chapter 1

We made the trip the to pick up Luna! It was such a Wonderfull experience, my breeders are so loving for their animals, and it shows. We had a close to 7 hr car ride home with her, and she even sleep on my lap for a few hours as I drove. She is a perfect angel. Last night she cried when we put her in her crate, but I put her soft crate on the bed at the foot, and she was out like a light. I plan on her sleeping in my bed at night, so Im not too concerned. She has had a few accidents on the floor, but she has made it outside a few times as well. What I do like the best is, when I bring her in, and place her in her crate, she settles right down and goes to sleep. I read Ian Dunbars book, but it seems like my Breeder is nudging for a different way. they are talking about the Koehler method. Anyone try it? Also no treats... Seems like treats would make training so much easier.. At the end of the day, I am so satisfied with how well I was treated, and all of the knowledge they shared. They gave me booklets and a book "Mother Knows Best" to read. Im so excited to begin this new chapter of my adult life.

Not sure if Koehler has progressed, but I don't know anyone who uses their methods anymore. Research it and feel free to come to your own conclusions. If anyone told me that, though, I'd suggest they crawl out from under the rock in which they've been hiding since the 1980s! Mother Knows Best is also an old-school, alpha dog approach to training. I'd toss it. After all, we are not dogs and we do not really know what all is going on, dog-to-dog. I think it's fairly ridiculous, personally, to pretend that we are dogs. We are humans and they are dogs; it's a totally different dynamic. Perhaps your breeder thinks that people are permissive and then complain and they are trying to find a way to balance that? The truth is, a lot of families crate their puppies for 8 hours, they are busy with kids, work, their lives, and they have really high expectations of their puppies and dogs right off the bat. You can train with food, but you also have to provide leadership (not to be confused with being alpha), and spend time actually training your dog. I use treats, personally. It's fast and effective. I also use management (i.e., controlling the environment, long lines, puppy proofing, crating, etc.). It works quite well for me both in every day situations as well as competition obedience training. I currently have a puppy and I've never done anything that either of those books suggest and he's great. He's a puppy, for sure, but I don't have any training issues.

    Luna is adorable...congratulations!

I've had a couple of dogs with whom I couldn't use treats for training...they seemed way too focused on the treats. As food-obsessed as Danny is, though, he was a dream to train. With treats. Why not see what works best for Luna and go with that?

    How adorable!!! Welcome Luna.

I took Asher to training classes -- first class was 16 weeks I think? We did 3 sessions of 6 weeks pretty much consecutively. It was all positive reinforcement with treats. One thing I was not able to do when he did something great---- praise him loudly like they wanted me too. It would set him off and he would do circles and flip and roll and then struggled to settle. It was cute. So when he was a good boy on command, I'd keep a normal tone and say "good boy". It worked. Good luck and have fun with Luna!

Oh my gosh, is Luna ever cute! My 4 1/2 month old has gained about 30 pounds in the 11 weeks we've had him, so take lots of photos, she won't look that little and adorably chunky for long!

I use treats for training. All my pups have run for their crates like their tails are on fire if they know they'll get a little treat when they get there. Henry is happy to get kibble for his training treats. I'm not familiar with the Koehler method, or at least, none of our obedience trainers have put forth that that's the method they adhere to.
