Backing Off the Breeder Search :(

i've driven myself mad in my search, and have been warned i may get on some "list of annoying applicants to ignore" if i don't thread more carefully.

at this rate it will be well over a year before i can find the strenght to pick a breeder and get on a list. Unless something magically develops. I may try fostering in the new year.

When I was searching, I came on here, and just asked advise from others with puppies. I called the breeder and I really liked what they were about. I put myself on a list in April, and just got Luna this last week. I don't understand what you mean by" list of annoying applicants??" Sorry for your stressful time.

think I have 2 breeders within 4 hr drive in any direction...and Im not impressed with either breeder....one of the breeders said they only did 1 litter a yr and had 3 yr waiting list...so I understand the frustration. but I tell myself I will know when the time is right and I even have a savings account just for my next pup...thankfully the chili doggy I have is doing great and has matured into an awesome dog...Im almost scared to get a second pup cause the bar is super high with my chili.

I think the more requirements you have the harder it is to find the "right" puppy. I was on the list for my griff pup for nearly a year. My one big requirement was the actual breeder. Then it was one of two momma's. Then it was a "show girl". The rest fell into place.

When the time is right, it will happen.

Backing Off the Breeder Search :(

    I have contacted many.MANY.

at this point even if i get my act together i may have shot myself in the foot with most. it would be awkward to go to a show now and try to talk to them (plus o froze up when i tried that last summer).

I am not finding myself able to trust a breeder. between clearances being a must and wanting a moderate lab (not crazy field, not very big conformation and some drive) and not being able to meet many it’s impossible to pick/feel comfortable.

there are two local breeders i am trying to meet, one has more «*as per standard*» size (which works for me) but we can’r schedule that til mid feb (so putting me on the wait list that far on, meaning i am that much farther down her line).
the other breeds bigger labs but does more sports (hunt tests and such as well as conformation) but she hasn’t responded to me about maybe meeting her dogs before committing.

then there are two US breeders i would not get to meet first. they may be familiar to some of you.

I can say, without a doubt, that knowing what I know now about the breeder I got Presto from, I'd do it all over again. I'd go without a dog and I'd save my pennies and jump through hoops - getting in touch, flying, all that stuff - to get a puppy from this breeder again. Before getting a puppy from her, I would not have said that and I didn't understand the sentiment. And, I've had my own dog since I was 20 years old, and at least two dogs starting when I was 25, so no dog would be really hard. Plus, my dog life is the majority of my social life. It would be lonely, for sure. It was worth the money, it was worth the wait, it was worth the feelings of discomfort, vulnerability and fear of disappointment trying to reach out to her, waiting for enough puppies to be born, waiting for her to tell me they are what I want, waiting for her to let me know which one was the right fit. I have never met such a knowledgeable, big-hearted, dedicated, caring and transparent breeder in my life. Those who get a dog from her, it's like family.

I'm not suggesting you get a puppy from her, but what I am suggesting, is that being as picky and particular as you are, do what you need to do - wait, save, etc. - to find the breeder that is right for you, someone you feel comfortable allowing to guide you to the right pup. That is priceless!

Sorry you are having such a hard time - I completely understand being picky though! I mean, to get what I wanted this time around I bred my own, LOL. Now in the process of weighing whether to breed one of the young girls in a couple years .... benefits are I keep the same line of dogs which I know I like, downside is I don’t know if I’ll be ready for a puppy at that time. Really not sure what I’ll do yet.

I am sorry to hear this Tanya.

Just be earnest and honest, and no one will put you on a list of annoying people to ignore. Be patient, the right situation will come in time.

Maybe this will work like those couples who are trying, trying, trying for years to get pregnant without success. Then they decide to stop the various treatments and meds and next thing you know, there's a baby on the way. We'll try to visualize a puppy on the way for you very soon.
