Pure Gold / Not A Lab

    Aye Mates,

A portraiture I did of my good Mate Dave's Golden Retriever "RANGER", taken last summer during an AKC Hunt Test. RANGER currently holds an AKC Senior Hunter title and is working toward an AKC Master Hunter Title.

Dave and I regularly rib one another with regard to our breed specific preferences but truth be told we just both love working with retriever breeds. I will concede that RANGER is a truly beautiful working dog.

    C & C always welcomed.

Oddly, I don't think of Goldens when I think of actual retrieving. I think of them more as family companions. I think of labs and various spaniels and other sporting breeds when I envision people hunting with their dogs. Silly me. Ranger is a handsome boy, for sure!

I admire people who train their dogs and thus improve the working "cred" of a breed. For some reason, Labradors have simply overwhelmed every other breed in all the retriever field sports. It didn't begin this way. The early titles went to Flat Coats and Goldens more often than they went to Labradors. There are precious few Chessies who enter the FC ranks. (Big joke used to be Chessies will never win the Field Trial, but they'll always win the fight afterwards.)

But big kudos to the Golden owners out there fighting to improve the breed! That is a gorgeous dog.
