    Puppy Diaries: 3 months old!

I'm just in love with this pup. I hope I don't jinx myself, but over the past week, something seems to have 'clicked' in terms of potty training. If we're in the main room, she goes and sits by the door to be let out. Sure, sometimes it's because she wants to chew on a stick, but 90% of the time she eliminates. If we're in a back room, she now pauses and gives us "the look" and we know to get her to the door. Hurray!

Crate training continues to improve. Sometimes when she's tired, she even crates herself. Last night we went to bed a bit early (9:30) but she let me sleep until 5 am. We ended up instituting a 7-8 pm crate break and she's actually napping during it, so I think it's a good time out for all of us.

At 12 weeks her training brain turned on, and she quickly mastered commands we've been showing her for weeks. She now has sit, paw, down, speak, leave it/take it, and go get it. Working towards 'bring it to me.' I figure by the time puppy k rolls around in January, we'll be ready to work on those commands in a high-distraction environment.

Still working on "come." Haven't yet found the right treat to make it highly enough valuable. She comes about 75% but if there's something of real interest to distract her, all bets are off. She loves to jump on us, especially in the kitchen. I turn my back, it's a work in progress. Still working on the clothes nipping. Sometimes running through commands will break her out of the biting, sometimes tossing out a few treats will, but often she will do the other thing and then go back to attacking my pants and shoes. She was sort of obsessed with my snow boots.

Speaking of...we had an unexpected snow on Sunday and boy, did she love it! We took a nice neighborhood walk in it and she romped her puppy heart out. A neighbor and his little girl were building a snowman; Stormy loved playing with the child.

In the past week, she's also met two Santas (covering "strange men with beards), a neighbor on a bike, and people young and old. Nothing fazes her, yet. We haven't had a thunderstorm but we live near a military base that has regular artillery drills and window-shaking bomb practice, so I think we've got the 'loud noises' covered.

In conclusion, I'm very tired and very happy.

Gosh, to those of us not living with her, time has zipped by! It hardly seems possible that she's already 3 months old! It's so great when they catch on to what you've been trying to teach them. And you were worried....!

I love your update! Having gone through it all too recently. I love how fast they change and grow and learn at this age!

Our trainer taught us a trick that has really helped with Barley's jumping. Get him (her) excited to come to you and jump, but as soon as the front paws come off the ground cross your hands (palms open and facing down) and hold them at arms length in front of the puppy's face. It blocks puppy's view and of you and upward momentum and makes them put their paws back on the ground. It works like a charm with Barley when he starts to get a bit jumpy.
