The "look at that" system with a clicker is how I taught Maxx. (Thanks to his wonderful obedience trainer, Leslie) I think it worked fabulously and I rarely have to ask him any more, he will automatically look at me, probably in hopes of a goody which I still occassionaly give, lol! It works, I will not complain about the many things I have to take on a walk!

This is why I love this board. I'm learning so much!

Bogey was first trained with Victoria Stillwell's Positively program. He did okay with it but boy did he eat a lot of treats!

Then we learned e-collar stuff and he became a changed dog.

Now I'm learning about the "Look at that" game and the Premack principle. Lots to read up on!!

Meanwhile I took him to the park this morning (without Misty). He got to meet several dogs. First was a big black and white dog that barked at him while he carried on, but I was able to keep him in either a sit or down for the several minutes it took him and his owner to pass by. Then a long haired dachshund that paid no attention to Bogey so he didn't carry on as much. Then a Jack Russell terrier, offleash, that while my back was turned trying to get Bogey to pay attention to me, walked up to us! Nice, calm dog (not a normal JRT!). Bogey was very nice with the greeting but as soon as he had his sniff he wanted to tear off--about took my arm off! I had a nice talk with the JRT's mom. Then a little shih-tzu, again off leash, who's mom didn't want Bogey to say hi. Bogey didn't carry on too much but did lunge at least once. Then we went to the big dog park (fenced off place for dogs within the whole park) and we were alone. I let Bogey off and let him sniff around and then we worked for 10 or 15 minutes on sit stay, down stay, come, heal. He did well and then we quietly walked back to the office. DH says we should do this daily. I have to agree.

Great thread! Lilly definitely gets way too excited when meeting new dogs and people, so will be going to get the reading material suggested, and work on "look at that".

Hope you update on Bogey's progress, as reading your park experience gives me hope for my Lilly.

Last night's walk was a success. I've determined that it is NEW dogs that set him off. The husky's up the street were barking away but Bogey totally ignored them! He's met them face to face and obviously remembers where they live. We didn't encounter any other dogs except those behind fences (they caused a little alarm, but not much).
