    First Time Away

So, I had to take a trip out of town for required management training out of state. Samson is 6 and I have never spent more than 10 hrs away from him or Asher. Well, their overnight stays after surgery. I was so worried. I arranged to have my sister come over and stay the night. She arrived at 7 and left at 0630 am. One of my employees at work is a trainer and sitter so she came over and spent some time in the afternoon. I was gone a little over 36 hours but it seemed like forever to me.

The boys did just fine. Only one hiccup. The sitter that came over during the day had home baked treats in her coat pocket. Asher sniffed them out and ate them all. She had to chase him around the house. She got to him before he ate the bag. Ahhh, that's my Asher. I had the liquid poo for a day. Hes fine now.

I go away again and the next time its 3 nights.
I dread it. I worry because of Samsons tta knee and the potential of hurting his other and then I worry about Asher.

I tell myself they will be okay. Samson was like a bouncy toy when I got home. Bouncing up and down with his front. Such love.

I'm not sure how to let go of the fear they will hurt themselves. It is distracting. I survived and they had a blast without me.

I know how you feel, I hate leaving them, even overnight.

I hate leaving my fur babies. I just can't wait to get back home to them.

I won’t be able to come home at lunch, and it Stressed Me Out big time!

Away from home - what's that? The only trips we've taken, overnight, has been to pick up a new furkid and we took our current one with us. Lots of pet friendly hotels out there. Know this is not possible on a work trip. Think I'd have my oldest grandson move into the house while I was gone.

Exactly -- they go with me everywhere to include beach vacations. I gave my sister no choice but to come over -- she lives about 1 hr away and is currently in nursing school. She was more than happy. I cooked her dinner and breakfast and left in the fridge. She enjoyed that. She will come over again in February when I go again. She's hoping her clinical rotation will allow her to stay during the day too but if not, I will invite the new sitter back to sit during the day. I'll make sure she comes over minus the treats!

I was afraid you were going to say Asher ripped her coat trying to get to the treats in her pocket! It's great that your sister can come and stay with the boys. My sister has 3 dogs and the stories she tells of some of her pet sitters have turned me off of trying a pet sitter. A family member would be much preferable, after all, I did let my human kids stay with their grandparents for a few nights a few times. (But now that I think of it, it was harder on the grands than it was on my kids, the little beasts.) I hope your trip goes well. Sometimes it's nice not to have to wake up at some early hour because you don't have to rush the pups outside. I still wake up at the same time though.

We travel all the time, and 70% of the time we can bring Bubba. We have a friend watch him for us and I'm pretty sure she gives him a better life than we do haha. She is obsessed with him, comes home everyday at lunch to be with him, and takes him everywhere she goes all weekend. If it's for longer than a week then we have two boarding options that we like as backups. We prefer to try to plan trips where Bubba can come, but sometimes it's just not possible. I don't worry about him when we're gone because I trust the people watching him, but it's always really exciting to come home to him

I feel your pain. We are going on a cruise in three weeks. We have a lovely young woman coming to stay with Macy. Macy loves her and she gets even more spoiled. She did a "test run" weekend with Macy and it went great. I still hate leaving her. Before we discovered this young woman, I literally drove Macy four hours to my sister's house. It was worth the drive to have Macy live the life she is used to (attention, beds, ball, treats).

I travel a lot for work but my husband is always home with the pups so I don't worry. But I sure do miss them! We skype all the time and I swear I spend half the call talking to the dogs. And when we travel for fun we always plan trips where the dogs can come along. But recently my husband had something come up where he might have needed to travel last minute while I was abroad for work, so we scrambled the week before to interview local boarding places. The good news is that it was never needed since my husband didn't have to travel, but I'm really glad we went through the exercise of looking for a boarding place. We found two great places close to our house, the dogs have gone through their 'interviews' and I'd be comfortable leaving them either place if necessary. In fact I might even take them for some daycare sessions because I think they'd enjoy it so much! I'd miss them though, even if only a day.
