    Vocal little lab

My other 2 lab girls were not ones to bark or make a lot of noise unless the doorbell rang. On the other hand Amber is quite vocal in the car or in the pet store. We are trying to ignore her in the car but in public it's not so easy. It's not that she is being aggressive at all but I know she is trying to get other's attention. I read if she barks in the house to drop a book to distract her and when she's quiet to reward her. Just don't want it to get worse as she gets older.Anyone else have a talkative lab?

Sounds more like she is frustrated because she can't get to something she wants. I've never heard of the book dropping. It must be like the can of pennies thing. In the car, is she crated? If not, do that. It is safer for her and for you anyway. Give her a Kong or snuffle mat, so if that works. In regards to being out and about, it sounds like she might need more training before you are taking her places. Is she heavily rewarded for sitting quietly by your side or standing or whatever, as long as she is quiet?

In the car we have her tethered with a harness to the seatbelt in the back seat. I will certainly start rewarding her more when she is quite. We took her to see my 99 year old dad today and all of the older people are so excited to see a pup and of course she got excited as well. What is a snuffle mat?

Stormy is very vocal. What has worked best for us is putting her in mini time outs. When in public, we turn her around so she can’t see the person or dog she wants to engage with, and tell her “hush.” As soon as she quiets, we turn her around again. It usually takes about 3 timeouts and she gets it.

In a crowd setting, I’d remove her from the area so she can chill a few seconds.

We’re lucky she doesn’t bark in the car, but the advice you got sounds good!

She sounds like she is frustrated and cannot understand why she cannot move. Snuffle mat is an enrichment type of toy to keep her busy. But, maybe you need to take a few steps back and slowly get her used to the harness? It's hard to say not seeing it or not seeing a direct example.

Some puppies may need to start in quieter environments. People can be exciting. Some puppies need reinforcement for being quiet or a different plan of action, like an instead behavior, not punishment, time outs, etc. for barking. Often, what you'll run into is a dog that doesn't NOT bark but one that barks a little and then you have to do whatever (correct, turn around, etc.) and wait for the dog not to bark for months, years, the dog's life... And, if you are remotely inconsistent, it will never work. My goal would be that my dog doesn't bark at all, not that he barks, I do stuff, he's quiet, every time. I'd deal with whatever is happening prior to the bark.

This is the snuffle mat Dan uses: https://www.etsy.com/listing/6604466...=1&pro=1&frs=1

I'd also gotten one of the fleece strip ones and neither dog likes that one...it lays too flat.

The snuffle mat looks like something she would love to pick up and run with. But if it's in a crate I guess not. Thanks for the info!

Oh, I can see that....maybe after the food is gone, though? I started using it after Dan was grown and already well behaved. Amazon also has this one (forgot where I got it at first).

For some reason all my kids are talkers LOL We used the quiet command. I didn't want them to stop barking as that is how they alert to something going on outside etc., so after they would bark i would say thank you quiet and treat. In stores or vet office they are always talking to everyone not in an aggressive way just talking and making noises, but for some people with Sarah and Coleman especially people would shy away and say something about them being mean dogs. I will say something to them if they dont quiet down after "saying hello" to everyone, if it lasts too long. Coleman was big and loud and wuold intimidate most people with his talking/barking it was a struggle with him at times. We would stand in front of him to block his view, it took a while but he finally go to the point of barking then looking at me.

I think they are like kids and are all different in what they do well and not so well. I find Amber to be more "talkative" when she is tired too.
