Our kitchen island has two levels. Although she'd never messed with the counters, just to be safe, we always kept Stormy's kibble treat cup on the upper level. On Sunday, I saw Stormy eyeing the ledge and yep, up she popped on to her back legs, front paws gently balanced on the top level, and her snout poked at the cup. I "eh-ehed" her, she hopped down, I moved the cup. But she kept watching me, and when I opened the fridge, I could see under the fridge door that she took my blocked gaze as an opportunity to pop back up. Oh, clever girl.
Luckily, we don't store anything edible on the counter. But I think she's gotten enough reward by random crumbs and is just curious enough that if we're distracted, she'll do a spontaneous surf. This morning, DH caught her licking the base of the margarita machine.
Another thing Kimber didn't do, sigh. Good thing she's so darn cute!

Well, now you know you're dealing with a smart little sneak.
Labs are never ending food seekers, aren't they?!? We have a baby gate installed at our kitchen entrance, a metal one with a gate that opens, to keep Lido out of the kitchen. So nice not to have to keep a constant eye on him.
My previous labs never tried counter surfing, but I'm thinking Amber may be one to try it. She also likes putting her feet up on the back of our legs and we tell her off with a little push. My son has a golden retriever who is a great surfer so we'll see what happens with this one. Speaking of margaritas Amber got a quick taste of my husband's beer last night when he was grilling some steaks. LOL!
The only time bubba ever counter surfed was Christmas when he was 6 months old. We were eating dessert and the leftover ham was on the island. We can see into the kitchen from our dining room table and I happened to glance over as he was hopping up there. He was so startled from my abrupt appearance next to him and my "WHAT do you think you're doing" that he skittered away and never tried it again!

Diggity started counter and kitchen table surfing several months ago. I tried all kinds of things to get him to stop, but what worked the best for him was to uhhh-uhhh him the second I caught him in the act and then quickly escort him to his crate for a short timeout (like 2 - 3 minutes.) I would say within a few days, he pretty much stopped surfing. He still does it on occasion (and only when I am in the other room), but the time out method worked wonders for him.

That Stormy is certainly a quick learner! And next time you make margaritas, I'm guessing Stormy will be "all up in your bidness" now that she's had maybe a hint of margarita essence.
We have a counter surfer also, but it isn't Henry, and we did NOT have a counter surfer before Henry came on the scene! Lark has started getting up on the counter to get down bones or toys I've put up on the counter by the back door, taking them from them when they run out so the toys stay inside. Sometimes, if one of them brings in a stick from outside, I put the stick on the counter until I remember to throw it back into the yard. I came home today from a few hour trip to check on my Mom to find the remnants of a stick lying on the rug near their crates. Henry was in his crate so I knew it wasn't his work. Lark was in hers but I hadn't shut her in because she has been OK out of the crate, NOT DOING ANYTHING BAD, since she was about 10 months old! I am afraid baby girl is earning herself being crated again when I'm not home.
Worth a try? The advantage with this one is, it works when you aren't there, if it works.
