I actually adopted an Elvis from a breeder in PA when he was 4 years old. He had been abused when they sent him off for field training, and was afraid of most men. We had gone to visit this breeder looking for a puppy after Clancy passed, and she introduced us to all of her dogs. She was shocked Elvis came right up to me with his tail wagging, showing no sign of fear. She asked me if I would take him and work with him while we were waiting on a puppy, and of course I sad yes. It was only supposed to last a couple months, but long story short, the breeder felt Elvis was better off living with me, rather than living in her kennels.

Elvis never really got over the abuse, he was always afraid of men, especially younger men and teens. He would always sit or lay with his back against something, I guess fearing someone coming up behind him. He really was the sweetest dog and it saddens me to this day that someone would have abused him. Sadly I lost him to kidney failure, complication from Lyme when he was only 10 years old.

If you want to stick with the garden name, I like Hawthorn and call him Thorn.

Just have to laugh a little at this because I always give mine two syllable names too but it is becoming really trendy (at least in our area) with performance dogs (Agility, Obedience, etc) to give them short one syllable names. For example I have a friend who has "Chill" and "Blast" both Border Collies ... but somehow they frequently become Chilly and Blasty!

Yet on the flip side, I tend to shorten my dog's names to "Chlo", "Cook" and "Sass" so I think there's just no winning.

Or Peri, short for Periwinkle. Thinking of names of flowers or plants in the dogbane family! :-)

I do both. i want a two syllable name that shortens nicely. even the best of names is off my list if it sounds bad shortened.

Maybe you could look at it from a different angle. Is there a theme to any of the dogs names in the pedigree?
