    Keeping puppy quiet post-spay

Stormy’s spaying is scheduled for tomorrow. My slightly hazy memory from Kimber’s spay is that it was very challenging keeping her quiet afterwards. Aside from having all the food dispensing toys at the ready, does anyone have advice for the recovery phase?

I hope all goes well for you guys! Does she have to stay overnight? I have such a vague memory of Sprocket’s post spaying recovery. All I can remember is she was sore and walked gingerly when I brought her home. Otherwise, I can’t remember a thing! I wonder if boys are the same?

Our vet keeps the dogs overnight after spay and neuter which saves the owner from hearing the poor pup whine and act so sluggish and weird after anesthesia. Even for a relatively small dental surgery to remove a broken tooth about a month ago, Lark was really out of it for 24 hours after the notes showed she got her anesthesia drugs, whining, wouldn't eat or drink water. If she comes home the day of surgery, just remember it takes some time for the anesthesia to wash out.

For her spay, since it was the day after that we picked her up, she moved a little gingerly for a day or 2 and then was pretty much back to normal. Our vets don't give pain meds. She wore a cone for a few days to keep her from licking the incision. I got a softer cone for her- I've never had much luck with the inflatable ones but a Comfy Cone worked well for us. She didn't want to run around inside the house, we did leash walks, but she was really ready to let loose once the activity restrictions were lifted. I hope everything goes smoothly for little Stormy!

Crate, crate toys and a cone. And some patience. Might get her used to wearing a shirt or something when you are home as that keeps some dogs from bothering the site. Is the vet keeping her overnight? If not, (and unless they have people there, I'd pass, personally), then expect some weirdness that first night from whining to howling, which is not from pain, but from anesthesia wearing off. They all react differently. Have you considered waiting on the spay until her growth plates are closed? You can potentially avoid some issues down the road by doing so.

The vet’s office is not staffed after hours, so we pick her up same day.

Happy to report Stormy's spaying went well this morning! She was seriously unhappy not to get breakfast this morning, and she kept barking at the vet's office in an attempt to get cookies, lol. We pick her up this afternoon- good thoughts for a restful evening are welcome!

Restful evening and uneventful recovery. I'm a big advocate of the regular cone for 10 - 14 days (our vet's advice every time). We've never had any complications. Those cones don't just help avoid licking, they tend to keep the pup calm. I always take off when there's a leash walk or meal involved and then it goes right back on.

A lot of folks are using fabric wraps instead of cones. My last few spays and neuters, no one bothered their incisions. Am I reading her birthday right, she got spayed at barely 6 months?
