I know quite a few people who have lost dogs to hemangiosarcoma of the spleen and in most cases the dog appeared fine up until a couple hours before they lost them.

Again, hoping the vet is wrong. Jolie had a large splenic tumor that never ruptured and that they don't think was hemangiosarcoma (the only way to know for sure would have been a biopsy which we didn't do because of her age and other issues). It was found by the vet palpating during a regular exam. She never showed signs of it spreading to other organs which is why we don't think it was actually cancer. Had she been in better health overall when it was diagnosed, we might have tried having her spleen removed, but she also had laryngeal paralysis and significant hind end mobility issues so we didn't want to put her through it. Eventually she stopped eating - we think the tumor had grown large enough it was blocking her stomach and we let her go.
I'm sorry for Jolie. I'm hoping that if it is, we're catching it in time. Fortunately, Zo is in great shape so we'll get her biopsied and spleen removed if it comes to that. Chemo and a lot of magic mushrooms. Fran did fine without her spleen. The oncologist is on standby and we have a surgeon picked out. I guess that's the only good thing about having been through this kind of thing three times in two years. It helps to know the receptionist at the cancer clinic.

Please hope that this vet is completely incompetent.

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”
