Bamps (04-04-2019)
News here is all about dogs getting sick in a town to the south and suspicious food and treats left in a park, maybe it's even a dog park.
And just now a friend posts that his Lab is recovering after 24 hours at the Vet after eating a block of rat poison. The rat poison was in the snowmobile groomer quonset this friend spends a lot of his time at. I walk Oban there, down the snomo trails. Oban is off leash there. The poison was inside but sometimes I let Oban go in the building to say hello, a couple of the groomer volunteer guys like dogs.
My friend says his dog is going to be fine and poison has been removed from the building but what a scare. BAd people, innocent but unknowing people, natural dangers, a breed that eats practically anything, sometimes you wonder if they should ever be allowed off leash.

What a scare! So glad to hear the dog is going to be OK. And, thank you for putting "NOT Oban" in the title. Almost had a heart attack.

I'm glad the dog is doing okay, and even on-leash there are no guarantees. I can't count the number of times I've been walking the dogs in the neighborhood (on leash) and Sass has managed to find and eat something without my knowing what it was - I'm only alerted by the sight of her chewing and she's usually swallowed it by the time I can get her mouth open. Sure, if I see it first I can tell her to leave it but she is very sharp-eyed, has the advantage of using her nose and is a sneaky little bugger so she finds stuff before I do most times. Thankfully so far nothing has harmed her, but I do worry. The other two seem to be either more discriminating or more likely lazier about searching out illicit snacks.

That's scary and is always in back of my mind. I remember one of our old members (randomgemini) dog Mugen died after he ate a rat/mouse that died after it ate rat poising a neighbor put out to control the rats/mice without thought to the latter.

Scary. Glad the dog it going to be ok.
It's one of the things I worry about most with my two. Brooks has a good leave it, Sophie, not so much. The problem is when you DON'T see them snarf something.
Wow, that really sucks. Glad the dog will be ok.
Annette47 is right, on leash is no guarantee. Some of the dogs in the south town were on leash.
I'm on a birding forum and every now and then there is news of an owl or hawk eating a rat or mouse that had been poisoned, and then the bird died too.
