Adopting a dog is no easy task......

We are looking to rescue a labrador retriever. We have been cruising facebook pages and rescue sites et al and aren't having much luck.

I guess that's a good sign that there aren't many out there.

We filled out an application a few days ago for one site but haven't heard back. We started to fill out another application but it was 10 pages long and I just gave up after they wanted detailed photos of the interior of my house.

We had one lined up from an aquaitence but it didn't pan out.

Meanwhile we keep hunting. If anybody in southern ontario comes across anything let me know.
    Thanks Everyone!!

I feel your frustration. We tried to go that route, too, and finally ended up getting Lido from a good breeder in our area (Georgia).

Growing up, all of my dogs were rescues. Pound puppies who we met and brought home the same day. When I was finally ready to get a dog as an adult I knew I wanted a lab and went straight to the local lab rescue. I had some very generic questions but before they would even answer them they wanted a $600 non-refundable deposit. I understand that they don't want to waste time with 'window shoppers' but come on. I just had some basic questions, I wasn't even looking at a specific dog. It was super frustrating. The local shelters just had a revolving population of chihuahuas and pit bulls, I never saw a lab come through.

So that's why I started looking at breeders (I admit I was an uneducated "adopt don't shop" person before that). I was really struck by the fact that the good breeders I talked to would NOT take a deposit until they had vetted me. Complete opposite of the lab rescue and disappointing that the rescue operated in such a way.

Wow...they demanded a deposit before you'd even expressed interest in a specific dog???

I have limited experience with a rescue (just Sunnie) but my fee was assigned/expected when I agreed to adopt. I had no idea that any rescues, specific breed or not, would operate otherwise. I sure wouldn't agree to a deposit up front like that. Not for a rescue.

Someone might be able to explain this in a way that actually makes sense...I welcome that explanation.

I, too, have started the search, some time ago. Hunting another senior lab. So far rescues have not panned out at all. Time to start contacting my breeder friends to see if they have a "baby" to place.

Asking for a deposit before even talking to you, that's off the charts. One rescue I went to wanted me to fill out a questionnaire; general stuff like yard, experience, my vet's name, etc., but no deposit was requested.

Yeah it really turned me off. They didn’t have a lot of info on the website (at the time, to be fair maybe things have changed) but my questions were along the lines of what you might expect them to include in an application. Like if they had any pre requisites about yard size, fence height, and generally what their application looked like. I’m not going to fork over $600 just to find out I’m not “worthy” of one of their dogs. After a few conversations with breeders I felt much more comfortable. [emoji2368]

Someday I hope to welcome rescue labs into my home though - when the time is right we have our home wide open.

I would not send strangers pics of the interior of your house. That's just creepy.

I don't know if this is an option but you may want to check Texas and other southern US states. We got an influx in Massachusetts from a Texas partnership. We're not actively looking but I like to keep tabs.

I sunk to Kijiji ads this morning.

Not sure what to make of this:

This is a little far away but I may call today:
Yellow Lab | Dogs Puppies for Rehoming | St. Catharines | Kijiji

    Good luck!

Searching for a rescue can be rough especially when you want something a bit more specific (breed or somethign close to a breed VS what most rescues call "lab mix" these days.). I've been at it for a year. I think we're in the same province so if it's the lab rescue I am thinking about they just stopped responding to me as well. I contacted to confirm they adopt to where i live (yes they do), filled out the app. They confirmed they had it and would review. A few months later nothing so I contacted them again and they said they would look at it and get back to me. Then radio silence and I decided to forget about them.

locally there is the odd lab but often they have issues not conducive to my lifestyle (ex: SA, no dogs, etc.) or are older (which is fine but i am looking for under 3)

so here i continue to look. I do peak at kijiji occasionally.

Thanks Tanya. I knew you were looking but couldn't remember if if was a breeder or rescue you were looking for.

We would prefer a male under 3 as well as Georgia seems to like males better but she also gets along with females.

The site I submitted to was lab-rescue dot ca. Was that who you were dealing with?
    Thanks Everyone!!
