Have you thought about doing Embark to see for sure what he is?

We are wondering what mix he might be.
1. He howls when we leave the house. I have a video camera that faces outside but picks up noise in the house.
2. His hair on his back is very sharp. Sharper than any lab I have ever seen.
3. He has a grey mane. It doesn't show up very well in these photos but you can see a shaggy kind of mane.
4. He has other grey patches.
5. He really likes going out and patrolling the perimeter and then coming back in. Its like a quick hourly check.
My wife thinks some kind of husky but we are just guessing.

His coat definitely looks furrier than Lab in that pic.
If you're interested in a DNA test, I highly recommend Wisdom Panel. https://www.wisdompanel.com/
His coat might be due to previous poor health or poor food or injury. It could change. Coarseness and colour might indicate an oncoming shed. Could you show us his mane? Jet had one at about 6 months to one year old, definitely longer, coarser brown hair on my black puppy. Breeder said it's similar to cradle cap on human babies, not common though. It grew out with her first big shed. Ovie sure looks Lab in those photos and the others you showed us.

Ovie looks very Labby to me...I do agree with Snowshoe...his coat could just be in poor condition due to lack of good nutrition and possibly losing weight.
He looks to be a little on the thin side (no fault of your own)...but with proper nutrition and gaining some weight, I think you may see his coat start to improve.
What are you feeding and how much per day?
He is getting Science Hill Diet. It was what the vets were giving him and he appears to be doing fine with it. His stools look fine.
He gets 1 Cup 3X a day. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Then a small handful before bed time. Georgia is on special food for her pancreas so she has to get a small bowl before bed or her stomach won't make it through the night.
They also split a bannana each morning and have baby carrot snacks throughout the day.
He is already starting to put weight on as we aren't noticing his ribs as much.
I'll try to get a better picture later today.
We are thinking about the DNA Test as we saw a story on CNN about them. The one reliable looking one on Amazon is about $150 Cnd. so it's a bit pricey. There are cheaper ones but from the ratings it looks like they get you to send a picture of the dog and then they are guessing. A lot of people complaining they are scams.
I don't think he's a mix at all.

He’s a Chatham-Kent Lurcher-Lab. No idea why I add lurcher, just goes well with lab. He’s just one very handsome guy and nothing is going to change that.

I have no idea. When I look at him, I only see a Lab! He seems to be such a sweetheart.
