We have so many sticks that fall in our yard and on the street where we walk. As soon as we pick them up in the yard and the street sweeper goes down the street we have a major wind storm and it all starts again. Amber is good at drop it but my husband swears she is picking up stuff just so we'll reward her for dropping something. I guess chewing up small sticks isn't going to hurt her but we always makes sure she drops any rocks she puts in her mouth. We don't have a fenced in yard so walking her helps see what she is getting into. I guess there's always a muzzle!

Be careful with mulch eating. Cocoa bean mulch is very toxic to dogs. We use mulch in our front and side yards, but we use pine straw in our back yard, for this reason. Here's an explanatory article: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/gar...e-for-pets.htm .

Thor was a terrible mulch eater but grew out of it before he was a year old. Barley is too, but he's more focused on sticks. He'll find the biggest piece of firewood in the pile and drag it somewhere for a good chew. It's easier to work on a drop it with a big stick than it is trying to work on the command + fish a small piece of mulch out of their mouths. Actually, we were able to use Barley's obsession with sticks AND fetch to train a solid drop it. If he dropped the stick I would reward him by tossing it for him. Now he doesn't pick up sticks to gnaw on them, but he'll still pick them up and bring them to me for a round of fetch. I've starting carrying a ball with me whenever I have him outside so I'm slowly transitioning the stick to the ball. He brings me a stick, drops it on command, and I toss the ball. He then ignores the stick. Progress!

PLEASE don't throw sticks. They can cause catastrophic injuries/death if the dog picks it up wrong, ie; the end of the stick goes into the dogs mouth, possibly down their throat.

lots of chew toys in the house leaves for little interest in backyard other than a nap in the sun or potty. every now or then chili will grab a pinecone or branch/mulch...but not often enough for me to worry.

She's not really much of a chewer in the house (although there are plenty of toys for her to chew.) She's focused on organic matter outside: mulch, sticks, bark, pine cones, and her favorite on walks, dead earthworms.
